Blinker Going Crazy!!

Post by sxt_003 » Tue Apr 26, 2005 2:39 pm

Ok well yesterday i go to put on my right blinker and the mofo starts blinking really fast...Now my guess would be the rear blinker is going bad...What i need to know is how hard is it to take off the rear tail and what bulb do i need to get for it. Also since i am changing them should i go ahead and do both?? Are there LED bulbs to replace it and if so what number. Thanx

The taillight is real easy to get off, just three "bolts" but I dont think that is necessary to replace the bulb. I dont know about the rest of your questions.....

You do not have to remove the housing to replace the bulbs.....

I think the # is 3157, but I could be wrong about that.

There are LEDs available for replacing the bulbs with...contact me for more info on that.

Same thing happened to me a few months ago. It means that your right tail light is out. The number is on the existing bulb so just get another one like it. All you have to do is pull away the carpet behind the tail light. The bulbs just twist and pull out of the socket. Then just pull out the old one and replace it with the new one.

DON'T USE THE LED'S!!!
they are NOT as bright as the 3157 bulb!, there are three 10mm plastic nuts holding the housing onto the car if you need to go that far....

Well, first of all.....there are several different types of LED bulbs, and I'm not talking about the ones you can buy at your local Auto Zone......The one's I would recommend are about 2-3 times brighter than the stock bulb.........Please don't post things unless you know all the details man.....

If the blinker is blinking very fast then it has a heavy current draw on it. Either the LED blubs are pulling to much power or you have a short.

From what I understand....he doesn't have LEDs yet....I could be wrong though.

Gary
You're facts are directly opposite with the electronic flashers used in Neons.

1. Traditional flashers are thermally driven by current flow and heavy load forces them to flash faster.
2. Electronic flashers use the current flow to control the circuit board and lower current flow causes the unit to flash faster.

The why does the increased load from my little utility trailers lights make the lights flash faster?

My New Dodge Ram does the samething with the car trailer hooked on it. It flashes faster too, and when I hook the enclosed trailer which has more lights on the back (heavier load) it flashes faster than the open trailer which has less lights, but both make them flash faster?

As for the LED's, yes your right...ive only tried the APC brand in my 85 shelby charger trying to get the rear lights brighter and they did not work. No i have not tried anyother manufacturer since then, but I dont see the need for led's unless you are running clear lenses....

Check the owner's manual.

I did one better. I looked at the unit, it is a regular one.

Something I learned while working construction, you don't only look at the blueprint (owners manual) you also look at the actual item.

When working on a shut down in a paper plant, a foreman ask a young engineer where he wanted a beam installed. The young engineer kept pointing to his blue print and saying, "There." After short time of the engineer only looking at the blue print, the foreman finally grabbed the engineers head and turned up to where they were working and said, "Where?" It was only then that the young engineer realized the beam on the blueprint wasn't there. The blue print he was looking at was drawn in 1927. The paper plant had upgraded things on 4 previous shuts downs. They ended up designing a new mount for the beam, and it took about 4 extra days which cost the contractor about a 1/2 million.

Any way the point is car companies put things out on bid and things change. I physically looked and the car has a regular unit, that is why the load effects it the way it does.

The front blinker could be out as well cant it?

Ive used a few different kinds of LED's
all claiming to be better and brighter than stock lights and that will last longer than anything. I ended up having to replace them so many times and it just wasnt worth it. Plus the LED's make the blinkers go fast if you install them for the front signals...Ive never tried using them for the tails...

IMO, Dont get LED's...You can try them if you want, maybe they will work...but for the most part they are not that bright, look tacky, and will break.

ok here's the deal...I don't currently have led's...

My front blinkers both work, however the right side is blinking really really fast, while the right rear isn't blinking at all. It woudl seem that it's just the rear bulb has burned out right?? If that were the case then at night when i turn on my lights, the right rear wouldn't come on right as it's the same bulb for both...

Neons use electronic flashers that plug into the back of the multi-function switch, not the traditional flashers. You also need to compare platforms to platforms.

I would for a short in the system that will cause a current draw as I stated above, or maybe change the flasher unit to see if it is bad since you still have stock lights in it.

thank you :)

so u don't think it could just be the bulb itself...i mean seeing as how the rear isn't working and the front is maybe sense there is more power going ot just the front instead of a spit between both, wouldn't that kinda make the blinker blink quicker??

just replace the bulb. it only costs a buck or two and it will fix your problem right there. I have had this happen to me so I know from experience. It's really not that big of a deal.

If your rear blinker is out that doesn't mean the whole light is out, just the blinker fillament, on cars that use one buld for both tail light and blinker there are two fillaments, one for the blinker and one for the tail/brake light. If your brake lights still work (or even your parking lights) then its more than likely just the fillament, so just get another blub, if that doesn't fix your problem then you have an even bigger problem, like a short to ground.
Justin- I have nothing but smart ass remarks to add.

as linkin said just one of the filaments may have burned out on the bulb. the 3157 is a dual filament bulb. one acts as the running light when you have the park/headlights on, and the other, brighter filament acts as your turn/hazard/brake light.

check to see if the bulb doesn't get brighter when you step on the brakes. if it doesn't, replace the bulb then retest. if it does light up brighter, then you have a more serious problem like linkin suggested, possibly a bad ground.

The bulb itself can have a short in it. That is not that uncommon.

Have you checked your blinker fluid  j/k
