This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Help

Post by yankeesking » Tue May 15, 2007 6:11 am

Last month, my engine light turned on. I went to Auto Zone and had them give me the code after test. The numbers they gave to me, I asked them what it mean is. They checked the computer and said it was Oxygen Sensor or something closes enough to it. I asked if it’s important to replace (this time I was broke ass) He was like nah, but it can eats your gas quickly. Fix it ASAP.

I nodded and since month ago, my gas disappeared 3 days after filled FULL. I was furious. I only drive about 30 miles per day.

Today, I ordered new part and I search Oxygen Sensor in 2gn.org threads and some of them mentioned it didn't affect gas. IM CONFUSED. Anyone can explain me which part of Oxygen Sensor that might affect gas runs out quickly than suppose to.

Today after I made order, I asked them where the part is and they point to part that behind header.

Thank for your help

If your O2 Sensor is bad, the computer could be reading it as running Lean. And to save the Engine it will Dump lots of fuel into the engine. Causing bad Fuel Mileage.

And your cat might go soon as well from all that extra fuel in the exhaust.

Replace the sensor, reset your computer, change your air filter, run some fuel injector cleaner, change your oil and you should be good. That is what I would do if I were you. Start fresh to ensure more reliability of the new oxygen sensor in conjunction with all other systems

There are two O2 sensors (upstream and downstream).

The upstream O2 sensor is used to provide feedback when the computer is in closed loop mode. If this sensor goes bad, it can have a large affect on gas milage.

The downstream sensor on the other hand does not affect the fueling algorithm at all. It is there simply to monitor the function of the CAT. If it goes bad... you get a code, but that's it.

oohh, i got the part today (Bosch:improved Fuel Economy, Better Engine Performance, and Cleaner Exhaust Emissions) i hope it's for upstream 02 sensor. Are upstream and downstream same part or different?

Thanks for reply, you guys

Basically they are the same but the connectors are sometimes different or the wires are dif. lengths. If they made the read different values then it would be no problem to remove the cat. If your lucky enough to hav the same connector/wire length then you can swap them to see if your upstream is bad. the downstream shouldn't have an effect on fuel, but on my cherokke it did. When I had it at the dealer for an unrelated problem I asked them about it. The tech said they should be ideally replaced in pairs, because they both use the same ground path and sometimes if one is bad it will effect the other. I guess from my experience I can't say he was pushing parts because it does make sense. But unless I was still having fuel issues after replacing the upsteam I wouldn't be in too big of a hurry to spend another $50 - $100 Sorry got a little long winded there...

i always use STP gas treatment. its the same thing as fuel injector cleaner (dont know why its called different) and its pretty cheap, usually $3 for a 3-pack at wally-world. use once a month and my baby runs grrrrreat!
