Yay, just put my K&N typhoon in.
Yay, just put my K&N typhoon in.
I put it in today, pretty simple install, basically my first. Started it up, and the sounds reverberating from the fenderwell made me look for the Silverado that started up at the same time, hahahahah.
I should have a pic up soon.

I'd get rid of that intake if I was you. That is, unless you want to try out my revolutionary new Crispy Hydrolocking Engine Technology. Or you can avoid puddles like the plague... Your choice.

I can't tell from the pic., is there any kind of rubber grommet where it goes into the fenderwell or does it just rattle around in the hole? I haven't got one yet but I know from having my TB just hanging off the bellows it makes a nice accordian with the vacuum changing from TB closed to part thottle. (Not that there is anything wrong with a tube in a loose hole) Is there?

its not to loose, theres a bolt that holds it on.
But other than that, its jsut a pipe connected to a big cone filter inside the fendwerwell.
One thing to remember, dont loosen your bellows tube and forget to tighten it, mine came off on the freeway, and put me at full throttle (Kinda reminded me of that part on "A scanner darkly") I turned it off, and rolled to a stop after popping it in neutral.
Kinda scary, lol.

That's right - be sure to install a depth finder on your car, too, so you can accurately gauge the depth of any puddles before going through them. Otherwise, people might think that you drive like a retard when you do accidentally go through one of these deep puddles and kill your engine - especially in an area that you're not familiar with.J-Villa wrote:just don't drive like a retard and try to go through giant puddles taht are like lakes

If you live in an area where water gets that high, you shouldnt have a cold air intake that relocates your filter to 7" off the ground. Anyone with a brain could tell you that. Use common sense. take it off during the winter even.

Well, I'm glad I found a real brain here in OB. After all, I've only been living in the Naples, Italy area for almost a year, and I haven't fully mapped all of the area around here where water might get that high during a rainstorm. You must know all of the ins and outs of all of the streets here, where all of the drains are on these streets, and which of these drains aren't clogged up by garbage. Oh, yah. OB - You can also tell me which of these streets won't magically develop potholes deep enough to a. not be seen at night, and b. deep enough to overcome your magically derived 7" figure. Oh, and you're such a driving expert that you can also school me on how to drive carefully enough to avoid Italians who have no respect at all for traffic laws, who are also navigating some of the lakes that form on the backroads here.OB wrote:If you live in an area where water gets that high, you shouldnt have a cold air intake that relocates your filter to 7" off the ground. Since we're getting into a pissing match here, OB, how do you know that I didn't have a Typhoon on my car when I hydrolocked the engine? Oh, wait! You didn't! You just assumed that I'm going on some anti-CAI intake rant, didn't you?
BTW, did you even bother to measure the distance between the ground and your Typhoon's filter? No, you didn't, did you? Rather than actually do so, and come up something closer to 10 inches, you just picked a number out of thin air in an attempt to be clever. Such a brain...

Basically...everyone's roads are different, depends where you live. Use your judgement, and you should be fine. Just because its a CAI, doenst mean its going to hydrolock your engine. Just dont drive through huge puddles and hit the gas at the same time. Ive had to drive through large puddles in the rain and I just let off the gas and coasted through before I started going again so water wouldnt get soaked up. Also, a bypass filter would be good if you are that worried.
I apologize for not strolling out to my garage and measuring the distance of my air filter from the ground. I understand that its possible to run into bad weather/areas where you cant do much about your cars setup, but is that really a good excuse for hydrolocking an engine? I dont know about you, but if I moved to another country, i'd check some things out about it first. Being a car guy, that sort of thing might come up. Have a good one.t vago wrote:Well, I'm glad I found a real brain here in OB. I was worried about the AEM intake I had, but during a recent rainstorm, I was heading up a decent slope on a state road. The rain was very strong, and while driving I ran through about an inch of water for a good 50 feet that was gushing down the street. It made a wave about 10 feet over my car, but I immediately let of the gas and had no problems with hydrolocking. Kinda eased my worries about the filter location, just let off the throttle as soon as your in the water.

Bahhahahahaa this is funny smeg....
Don't rip on it through puddles and you'll be fine, they have to be deep enough for the filter to submerge for you to be in any real trouble... if you have a 5-speed, just push in the clutch. There will be so little vacuum that the engine will not be able to pull in any water through the filter..(this is if you can't avoid a big puddle ahead)
If your really worried about this type of crap happening to ya.. then go out and buy yourself a K&N Precharger.. its a nylon over-filter that goes on the CAI filter.. and its like a nylon running coat, water just beads off of it.. they make your filter 99.7 percent waterproof..

Don't get too smug........I live in Hanford (30 miles south of Fresno), I hydrolocked my engine last year........I had the EXACT SAME INTAKE you do.rannox wrote:Does Wayne Brady have to choke a bitch?
By the way, there are supposed to be two brackets that come with the K&N Typhoon, if you didn't get them, I suggest you call K&N.
