Weird vibration noise around left turns

Post by Ryanm07 » Thu May 17, 2007 11:37 pm

Ok so I go around left turns, I can even be going down the road and turn my wheel left then right and sway back and forth and I can hear it when I turn to the left on the left front. Its like a vibration that I can feel a tiny bit in the steering wheel but can definetly hear. I just did my outer tie rod ends, and got a balance and aligment a week ago. I have 17" wheels with 40 profile tires, and I do have a slight dent on the inside lip of the wheel where its comming from. The dent has been there for some time though, I found it when I did the tie rods, if it was that I just would find it weird that I would just be hearing it now. I grabbed the grease fittings on the ball joints when I did my tie rods and they did not move. Anyone have any ideas? thanks!

wheel bearings??? lift up your car and ock the steering wheel, then yank it left and right and see if it has play.

lift the front end so the wheels are only a few inches off the ground. get a large pole or prybar and lever it under each wheel to see if you can hear clunks. if you can hear the clunks then it could be ball joints also. they sometimes squek at you when they are taking a dump... i have a dakota trust me i have become a ball joint expert :banghead: if not rotate the wheels and listen to the bearings as well.

hope that helps

could also be a bad tire, i had a similair problem, whirring noise in the turns, and vibration in the steering wheel.. had my bearings replaced, no fix. cost me 800$ in parts and labor to find out it was a defective tire.. i think they said the belts were shifting, or something.. could try rotating your tires and see if it goes away, or changes locations.. free to check at least before dumping $ at a mechanic..

yea it seems to have gotten worse. It actually was probably because I was on the highway. But Its sounding like something is ridiculously loose. I'll check the ball joints but I dont personally have enough money to replace things hoping its the problem. My family has a good mechanic that we always use. I'll take a look underneath tomorrow, but if I dont see anything that makes me positive its the problem i'll pay the $30 for him to look at it and tell me what it is. Tie rods were just done, tires are 5 months old, axles were done about a year and a half ago (I am turbo now though so I put a lot of extra stress on them) but i've never replaced the wheel bearings or ball joints with 150k miles, so i'm with you guys thinking its one of those.

This is why I hate bringing my car places. It turned out to be loose lug nuts. They must have not tightened them enough after balancing my tires. It had crossed my mind as a possibility, but I figured it would make the noise at other times then left turns. Plus it wasnt a "loose wheel" kind of noise at all. Me and my boss went out there and started pulling on stuff and at first thought wheel bearing then realized what it was. I feel like such an idiot now, but I guess I learned to always check over everything. Thanks for all your help and sorry for wasting your time with something so stupid!! lol

not a waste of time.. glad u got it fixed... i think i also read somewhere that you should retighten your lugs after you drive on them for a few miles, whenever you take tires off and put em back on.. think it was for aftermarket wheels, not sure where the post is but i know i read it on here somewhere.....

this is really the funny thing, cause there was atleast two times that I was going to ask such a silly question, but figured that would have been the first thing one would have checked....

Glad it was easy fix
