Silent exhaust....

Post by DJSpellBound » Sat May 26, 2007 1:44 am

I am through getting pulled over for my exhaust.... it's now tourist season in Newport RI and staties are just well being 'richards'. The local cops know who I am, considering they have seen my car all year long...My garage can only stamp so many 'fix it' tickets so I can send it back to the DMV. And I can only creep so much below 3000rpms with my Vibrant exhaust.

Now, I am saving up on the side for a swap with a 2.4 . It might be tomorrow or it could even be next spring.

Question is, I am interested in a straight back exhaust, (no dual at all) of which can bolt on currently with the engine I have now, and will just bolt onto the 2.4 . Now if I remember correctly the bolt patterns are different between the 2.0 and the 2.4 but basically should be the same (correct me if I am wrong).

So I am looking for something that still sounds pretty nice but just not too loud with some type of performance boost.

2 options:
1 - 01+ R/T style dual outlet (single in - split dual output)
2 - 1GN 2.0 DOHC muffler (single in - dual output on one side)
I ended up going back to the stock R/T muffler on my car since in NYS any exhaust mods are illegal and ive already been ticketed twice....

i vote r/t muffler, absolutely love it on mine.. not too loud, but def a nice sound to it... and its OEM part, so i dont think they can give you a ticket for it either even if they try and be a dick...

I am running the Dynomax SuperTurbo exhaust system. If your running a cat it should keep it pretty quiet until you rip on it. Mine comes from the turbo back so the turbo kills some of the sound though. its a strait through low restriction design, worth looking into... you can get it at summit

edit: as far as getting a citation for an OE part you are correct. If you can prove that its original equipment from the factory then you are good. Its like window tint. If your windows come from the factory with like 5 tint all the way around it. your good. but if you put 5 tint all of the way around then yeah you can get a ticket. I think the GS. down here say 108 db but i can check that for you if you want. its a good reference point anyway.

Just as long it's quieter than what I have now, and a single output I'm interested...Pm Sent.

I've been pulled over already because the 'dual' pipes looks modified. I do regret though getting rid of that setup. Cops are so naive when it comes to cars.

I'll check that out today if they have a single pipe output and if it's compatitable with the SRT-4, thankz.

That's my setup currently w/ the cat. :(

Not sure, the muffler might be slightly smaller than the 2gn.

Thanks for the responses guys.

PM returned. yeah its the quietest cruising/idle exhaust out there. At WOT it sings pretty nicely, but its almost too quiet otherwise. The r/t exhaust sounds good too, but its even quieter. Id go with one of those two.

Pm Sent back btw... nice f'n setup.

I guess my options are pretty limited... now can anybody please verify if I decided to go back to the R/T exhaust for a 2.0 'if' it will work with a Turbo 2.4?

Or can I just pickup a SRT-4 Set up?

The rt exhaust will work with the 2.4 downpipe and will bolt right up, but it wont flow nearly as well as the straight thru design of the srt exhaust. The srt exhaust is extremely loud on an NA car (the turbo quiets it down). You might just run to a muffler shop and have them weld in a decent sized glasspack (i.e. Cherrybomb) and run a straight thru exhaust. That way if you do the motor swap it will already suit the turbo and flow good. An srt exhaust or even a custom exhaust would work fine with this idea.

i run the stock srt exhaust, when i drive "properly" it isnt loud at all, but when i drive normal  well you get the idea ;)

and all i have is a CAI and teh exhaust, the srt is a dual exhaust too, but it looks relatively stock.
