Anyone ever built your own tirerack?

Ok, i got like over a dozen tires in my garage and im getting tired of looking at the stacks. anyone built their own tirerack? just looking for ideas on how to go about it the cheapest way possilbe, will probably just use some 2x4s to build it up, probably 3 tires high (if itl clear the ceiling) by, say 5 wide? im not a very good carpenter so anyone with some experince that might be able to suggest how to make it sturdy. dont want it falling over on the car or anything.

something like this: but how is the best way to construct out of wood to support the weight, as 8 of my tires are mounted on rims, the others are not (so rims would go lower than tires for a lower cg)

To tell you the truth those metal ones are junk and they hold up alot of weight. We use them at work for finished loose customer tires and they are cheap metal but hold a nice bit of weight. IDK about the shops around you but you could always go and ask them where they get theres. I think we payed $50 for our last small rack.

If your going to use wood. I'd go with 4x4 for your corner posts. Use 2x6 for the bottom rack and put your mounted tires low and then you could build the next ones out of 2x4. You may want to put in center braces if you build it longer then 5ft.

I'd also use lag screws or carriage bolts instead of screws and nails. and I'd secure it 2 points either floor and ceiling or ceiling and wall. That way it don't tip over on you.

I'd builded out of treated wood if you did use normal pine I'd put a good water seal coat on once I was done.

thanks, ill just ask the guy at the lumbershop when i get the wood bout carriagebolts and such... i woulda just used screws cuz i honestly dont know jack about woodworking (or what different types of bolts and such are)

someone on another forum suggested hanging the tires by the rim, as its less stressful on the tires.

hanging it throught the wheel or tire would require a removable bar.

also, building it out of 4x4's, 2x6's and 2x4's isnt going to be that cheap.

probably would need:
4 - 4"x4"x8'
2 - 2"x6"x8'
2 - 2"x4"x8'

then your bolts and such.

i think if you were to anchor it to a stud in your wall you would be fine, but you must find a stud. just anchoring to the drywall will do no good.
