I think the rice patrol will pull you over too  Just kidding, actually it is not too bad, but yeah, if a front plate is required, than that is not allowed.

From RCW 46.16.240:
It shall be unlawful to display upon the front or rear of any vehicle, vehicle license number plate or plates other than those furnished by the director for such vehicle...
And is it actually illegal to not have a front plate in WA? The RCW isn't exactly clear.

i got hassled for no front plate on my skunk. i got hassled for no front plate on sasha. and my soon-to-be ex-wife got hassled for her plate being on her dashboard.

I think everyone handled this pretty well. WA does require a front plate, just because your friends haven't gotten a ticket for it doesn't make it legal.
RCW 46.16.240
Attachment of plates to vehicles — Violations enumerated.

The vehicle license number plates shall be attached conspicuously at the front and rear of each vehicle for which the same are issued and in such a manner that they can be plainly seen and read at all times. However, if only one license number plate is legally issued for any vehicle such plate shall be conspicuously attached to the rear of such vehicle. Each vehicle license number plate shall be placed or hung in a horizontal position at a distance of not more than four feet from the ground and shall be kept clean so as to be plainly seen and read at all times. In cases where the body construction of the vehicle is such that compliance with this section is impossible, permission to deviate therefrom may be granted by the state patrol. It shall be unlawful to display upon the front or rear of any vehicle, vehicle license number plate or plates other than those furnished by the director for such vehicle or to display upon any vehicle any vehicle license number plate or plates which have been in any manner changed, altered, disfigured or have become illegible. License plate frames may be used on vehicle license number plates only if the frames do not obscure license tabs or identifying letters or numbers on the plates and the plates can be plainly seen and read at all times. It is unlawful to use any holders, frames, or any materials that in any manner change, alter, or make the vehicle license number plates illegible. It shall be unlawful for any person to operate any vehicle unless there shall be displayed thereon valid vehicle license number plates attached as herein provided.

[2006 c 326 § 1. Prior: 1987 c 330 § 704; 1987 c 142 § 3; 1969 ex.s. c 170 § 10; 1967 c 32 § 18; 1961 c 12 § 46.16.240; prior: 1947 c 89 § 1; 1937 c 188 § 36; Rem. Supp. 1947 § 6312-36.]
There is a good chance that you can go without a front plate, or with that weird front plate and not be hassled as it's a very minor offense. However, dont' be surprised if you do get a ticket for it, I have.

Do you live permanetly in WA? Do you have a WA driver's license? If you answered yes to either then you have 30 days to register your car in WA. After 30 days your OR plates are techinically illegal too. :D

Also, if your still have OR plates why the worry about WA laws?

It sucks having to have a front license... I really wish we didn't have to have one, but what can you do....

just a question of curiousity... does it need to be right in the center of the bumper? I was thinking of putting it below the front passenger head-lamp.

i think oregon has the same rules as washington ... and btw the guy I bought the car from doesn't have the title yet so I don't care about that xD Since the title is not transferred yet I can register it anytime I want lol

So technically you are driving his car, it's not even legally yours. I wouldn't piss him off if I was you.

That also doesn't change anything though, when you sell a car he has 5 days to report it sold and you have 30 days to get it registered in your name. This is another one of those situation where just because you or a friend did it doesn't mean it's legal.

California says the same thing, you have to have a plate, although there is case law establishing that if your car does NOT have pre-existing mounting locations (or predrilled holes) in the bumper, you do not legally have provisions for a front plate, ergo you are not willfully breaking the law and are exempt from the consequences.

NOW, if your car had holes or a mount plate drilled in after the fact, it doesn't matter, you now have to keep the plate on there. So swapping to a new bumper without the mount option is the way to go.

When this Neon was painted, I had them fill in the mounting holes.

Edit: Now, a cop could give me a ticket, sure, and I could go to court and have it dismissed with the case law, as many have done. I'd still have to go to court, of course, which is time + money. But then again, a cop can pull you over for modified exhaust, just because he thinks it is (and it could be an R/T and he's never seen one with twin tailpipes) and still, you are inconvenienced. All easilly proven in court, but the bottom line is cops can cost you plenty of headache just by writing tickets that won't stand up in court.

So the choice is yours, I suppose. Everything that most of us (from the looks of it) like to do to our cars is asking for trouble. All the more reason to cruise like a senior down the streets, so that most of them get the idea that we're not out for trouble.
Drive it like you stole it, and work on it like you married it.
