Why, WHY?!

Post by Bella Lugrossi » Wed May 30, 2007 6:38 pm

Jesus Christ!! Is the whole world out to get rid of my damn dreads!! Everyone except my loving hubby wants me to get rid of my dreads. "It's time to grow up April, Time for you to get a job, how will you get a job with hair like that?" GAAAAAHHHHH!!!!! I'd like to go back to work, but I am trying to go back to school first. I don't want to overload myself, have a fucking breakdown, and then be worse off than when I started. FUCK! Anyone know where to get a job for a dready girl? Or how about childcare? Beacause we all know that childcare is easy and cheap to find.

*deep breath* ok, rant done.

ummm you shouldnt have a problem with the dreads, and yours doesnt look sloppy so i dont see why, its all how you present your self when you go for an interview, you can do the bun thing or a pony tail as long as your wearing professional clothes they cant discriminate against you. and if someone mentions it say its for religious reason....

By the way dont get rid of them they look freaking hawt. I LOVE DREADS.

while i agree with you that its stupid....i also agree with whoever told you it would be hard to find a job....business is all about how you present yourself and your product.....i think if you throw em in a ponytail like krack said you should be fine....the lip and eyebrow ring however you might have more of a problem with lol.....when i go to work i have to take out my piercings and cover my tats so i somewhat know how you feel....or just be a graphic designer like opi lol

You can find a job. Just have a positive attitude and have character and above all, be yourself and you should have no problem. A cute gal like you has an intelligent mind, we've all seen it here on the board. Present yourself well and it will work itself out.

April, tell them you know a 20 year old with 30+ piercings, a dark blue mo-hawk, who works in an office building and does graphic design.

You're dreads arn't a problem. As long as you're good at what you do, know how to present yourself, be kind, treat people like humans, there is NO need to change your hair.

Tell them to 'eff off. I love dreads. If I could deal with the nappy-ness, I'd get 'em too.

I have hired people who look like Opi in the past, it was based on experience and ability to do the job, not looks. Plus, we were a huge corporation, and since it is mostly behind the scenes, most places won't care, unless you deal with the general public, and then corporations who say they are "Equal Opportunity Employer" suddenly become "EOE - as long as you fit our standards!" I hate corporations sometimes, and I'm a republican!

Opi wrote:you're dreads arn't a problem. As long as you're good at what you do, know how to present yourself, be kind, treat people like humans, there is NO need to change your hair.
Absolutely!!! I was hired because my boss told me he thought, man this is a good kid, but he does not have "enough" experience. But decided to give it a shot based on my personality - legal? I dunno, but I wasn't discriminated against, but he did make a desicion based on who I was and not my qualifications.
Opi wrote: Tell them to 'eff off. I love dreads. If I could deal with the nappy-ness, I'd get 'em too.
I really only wanted to quote this part because of the hilariousness of the statement when put with the previous statement ;) :pokefunatOpi:

With your skills, education, and abilities, you should never have to be turned down for a job. As far as your looks, if someone has a problem with your hair, based on company appearance policy (which I think is a crock of BS anyway!) then that is NOT a place you would want to work for anyway! The casino I worked at started firing the "fat, ugly, and old" women who were cocktail waitresses, based off of things like "cut backs, downsizing, disciplinary action" and then started giving them the worst schedules possible. What happened was a bunch of them quit or got fired or let go, and immediately they were replaced with girls barely over 20 who were absolutely beautiful, thin, whatever... is it right? HELL NO. Does it happen? HELL YES.

I say that to just say don't listen to what others are telling you, you can get a job doing anything no matter what you look like, you just need to look for them :D
