I have been talking with the people at Import Intelligence about a cluster needle swap. They offer 3 or 4 diffrent color options but say that the only available option for the Neon is red. Here is a copy of my email convo.
me: Any estimate on availability of gauge set of the 01-04 Neon (SXT) w/ tach? Id be very intrested in purchasing one.
In the needle sets....it lists only the red as working on that model Neon. Why is that? I would really like to do blue needles w/ red numbers.
II: Sorry we currently don't make a gauge set for the neon SXT. The needle kit is only available in red because of the design of your factory needles.
me: The gauges...it says on the site coming soon. So I again I ask when do you expect to have them available?
Needles....ok....what specifically about the design will not allow any other color?
II: I looked into this a little further and the only reason that this gauge set was never released is because there are no photo's of the set. If you would like to order this set I can take the order for it over the phone. The set listing we have is 01-04 SXT Neon.
me: With or w/o tach?
Needles....ok....what specifically about the design will not allow any other color?
II: The OEM needles are made of tinted red Lexan.
me: ok...if the OEM needles are lexan....how does that prevent useage of a differant needle?
II:With your needles it prevents the use of other colors. If they were a clear lexan like Nissan or Toyota you would be able to use any color.
ok....Im gonna reach thru the internet and choke a btch. Am I missing something about the needles? Or are they just bein dumb?

What's going on is that other manufacturers often use clear
lexan with a tinted backing. I'm guessing they don't have the
fabrication capacity to make new needles, just buy up OEM ones, scrape the backing off, and paint a new backing on them, selling them at a markup. Just a guess though.
