BC coilovers... Inverted or no?

Post by Arro » Mon Jun 04, 2007 12:13 am

I'm seeking opinions on if I should buy inverted or non-inverted coilovers.

Simple as that. I know a number of you have BC's, so fire away.

The only reason I can see going inverted versus non, is if you will be racing heavily.

The inverteds seperate the gas and fluid better (nitrogen/gear oil), and since they don't compress the gas in the same manner as the others, they run cooler, thus saving the seal from hardening and cracking. They also save on unsprung weight, thus making the wheel more responsive to you and the valving of the coilover.

I know that Justin (Praesepe559) will have his V1 coilovers for sale soon. They would be a great deal for you.

However, they stopped making the V1's for a couple of reasons.

1. They were near identical to someone else they made coilovers for.

2. They (BC) wanted thier label of coilover to be better than the others.

3. They increased the shaft size, for a more precise feel, and the heat transfer is much better.

4. A total redesign of the valving assymbly.

So, while you may get a great deal on his V1's, you will have to ask him how he honestly feels about them. And, I know Justin VERY well, he will be brutally honest with the good and the bad. Though I'm not too sure he is unhappy with them. He just wants to focus on other things than his car.

Good luck in your choice.

But my final word is, great brand choice, but, don't spend the extra money on the Inverteds unless you SERIOUSLY plan on road racing/autocrossing your car.......often.

Hmm all good things to consider... yeah he mentioned to me about his possible sale and I told him I'd have a serious interest in that.

For the first couple years, I want to attend a few events each year... I think in Street Modified SCCA class. SM will allow me to use an SRT swap if I want, with whatever turbo setup I want, and what they refer to as "race-bred springs and shocks". I take that to mean coilovers.

That's the plan at least. Anyways I don't know if that's what you meant by "often" or not.

OK so what are the BC versions called (inverted and non), the prices, the exact specs, and the specs of, say, the Megan racing version?

BC Inverted 30 way adj. F&R Pillow Ball Mount / Spring Rates: Front 8kg, Rear 4kg Shaft size 46mm (You can specify any spring rate you want when you order them though)

BC BR V2 30 way adj. F&R Pillow Ball Mount / Spring Rates: Front 8kg, Rear 4kg Shaft size 46mm (You can specify any spring rate you want when you order them though)

Thats about all the info I could find for you.

Here's a couple good threads with info on springs, and coilovers.

And here's an install thread I did, back when I got mine.

Good luck!

Back in January I was thinking of ordering a set of the inverteds however since I drive the car on the street, I wanted a lower spring rate. I was informed that the springs that come with them are the lowest rates you can get and if you want a different rate you can only go higher. I didn't ask about the regular version but I think they can go either way on the rates.

I lost interest in them after that and spent the money on something else.

Any spring rate may be chosen 2 steps up or down.....so, you can choose as low as 6f/2r, or as high as, 10f/6r.

Mine ride just fine 8f/4r.

"Unfortunatly Pete at BC Racing says that they don't have a 7kg spring that 8kg is the lowest they make to go on the inverted model. "

^ ^ ^
That's part of the reply I got in a pm from a vendor when I wanted to order the inverteds with the next step lower spring rate. Have things changed since January?

Remember that the valving has to be matched with the spring rates. If you have to stiff of a spring with at strut that is valved softer then you will be bouncing down the road like a Hyster Forklift.

oh I know, but im a bit confused about the said 'optional springs'. I would assume that the optional springs are sold in a set with custom valved dampers matched to the increased rates.

The BC struts are valved so that you can go up or down 2kg but I wouldnt go up. I also think that when ordering you can also customize the valving to what ever spring rate you want. But to high a spring rate and the only place you would wanna drive your car would be a race track

I called BC and was told that custom valving was not offered for any of the coilovers in their current line-up.

Last time I checked they just don't list the inverted. On SRTforums Cory posted up the prices for them but I couldn't find them on the site.
