Possible Piston Slap Follow Up.

Post by 0dd3n » Thu May 05, 2005 12:29 am

OK, well, the noise is seeming to stay the same. I went a goodyear shop and had the guys there check it out. They said its normal for almost any car over 70000k to make that noise, but like was said before, ill get a different opinion everytime. THey gave me a can of JB so i put it in and it seems to be helping subdue the noise. Also, i forgot to mention, i only hear the noise more prevalent after ive been driving, its not as noticable when ive just been idling for a bit. so what do you guys have to say about that?

Also, i have some cash put away just in case any one of the bad things happen as you guys said in the other post.

Would it be worth it to either rebuild the bottom end if worse comes to worse or maybe go to ebay or a junkyard and pick up a new 2.0l engine for roughly the same price as the rebuild kit with under 70000k on it? the engines appear sometimes on ebay for usually 300 to 400 plus shipping. so if worse comes to worse, im ready for it and have everything ready to go if i have to. tell me what you all think, thanks

 sorry if im bugging you guys about this but i just spent about 600$ on mods and i dont want my engine taking a shit on me after all that money i saved goes to nothing while my cars temporarily out of comission

70,000 miles is not much on a Neon engine. We buy a lot of used engines for rebuilding and many with well over 100,000 miles still show the factory cross hatch.

One thing you can do to put away your fears to to do an oil analysis. You can but a kit at a lot of parts stores. You may have to ask. You follow the instructions and send in the samples. They will see what contaminates are in the oil. If you have a lot of aluminum, then the pistons maybe getting damaged, and you should think about getting an engine. If little aluminum is found, then the slap your hearing is normal and your good to go. They will give you possible reasons for specific contaminates.

I would recommend a salvage yard over Ebay, because most salvage yards do offer some kind of warranty.
