A couple specific SRT intercooler install questions

Ok I finally got my stock SRT intercooler to install on my turbo 01 se. atx. I've got a couple questions. The first is after looking at it, from just having the hood open it looks like the ECU is in the way. Is that true? or is there room between the radiator and the ECU to cut and put the intercooler through? Is there really anymore to it besides cutting two holes in the rad support and mounting it? I'm prepared for the cutting, I just want to be prepared for anything else that will come up like relocating things. Also, what are you guys using for the IAT sensor? I've had a drilled hole with like a bushing in it that its just stuck in, I just dont feel that its a very good way of doing it. If you guys could also give me some advice on the best way to run my tubing it would help me a lot. I heard between the trans and motor on the bottom, but from what I can remember theres this like plate thing with 4 bolts that connects the two and I'm not sure if i feel comfortable taking that out. thanks again!

Check out page 1 for pics of the IC install, and page 2 for pics of the IC piping install.

I moved the PCM to where the batter normally is. Some people have gotten it to work without moving it though.

You'll definitly want an IAT sensor that threads into the charge pipe, not the goofy push in kind.

What are you doing for engine management? If you're just using a RRFPR then you don't really need to worry about the IAT sensor anyway. Just tie it up out of the way somewhere.

Thanks for the links. yea i'm using a RRFPR. But wont that read air thats much cooler and possibly make my engine go kaboom?

The IAT sensor IMO doesn't do much from what I've seen. It didn't change my fuel correction when I stuck it in my cold side pipe from my intercooler to my TB versus when I just zip tied it out of the way.

ok well I started on this late this afternoon and didnt even come close to finishing, which i figured would happen. I did run into one problem I wasnt expecting at all. After cutting the normal holes I realized that the out side of the intercooler left absolutley no room between itself and the tranny. I saw a lot of pictures, but I guess none of you guys have an atx like me. So I just kept on cutting down until I could get it to sit low enough for the fitting and pipe to go on. Then when i'm all done i'll have to have my buddy weld some kind of brace in there so my radiator isnt all over the place with a huge piece of that support missing.

I can see where the tranny would come into play when it comes to room...didn't think about that. Be sure to brace it and you'll be fine. Good luck.

Yes, having an auto when you using the SRT intercooler is a PITA. I had a auto for my first two turbo setups and it really caused problems when trying to run IC pipes from the driver's side outlet to the TB. It is very tight in there, but it can be done. Try using the stock SRT coldside pipe and modifying it to fit in there. That is how I went about it...

yea I actually found some braces at lowes that are just about perfect. And even with all my weight they're impossible to bend so hopefully they'll work ok, i'm gonna go now and bolt them in on one side and then probably cut the other side so its even.

UPDATE! the braces actually worked perfectly, which i really wasnt expecting. The intecooler is mounted and ready to go. Now I have to pull the turbo, reclock it, and then do the piping. I tried to pull the turbo today but the assholes that made my downpipe did something to the bolts where the pipe meets the turbo. i'll probably end up having to cut them. Hopfully going from non intercooled to this will be worth it :roll: Since I couldn't find any, for future ATX owners who want to use this intercooler i'll post up pictures and the info on those braces so they can get it to clear the trans.

^ I think he is running an SRT-4 stocker, but I could be wrong.

I'm glad to see you got the SRT IC on there with that ATX. It is a tight squeeze but it surely can be done. I'm interested in seeing the brackets you bought and how you used them.

Garrett TB0335 (86 chryselr new yorker turbo) at stock boost settings for now, which is only spikes of up to 7, 4 when just driving normal. after I get new injectors the most i'll run is 10, and thats only when i goto the track. And yea its a stock SRT4 intercooler.

I'll have pics within the next couple days of everything. I had to express ship a 45" reducer since I couldnt get my turbo to clock perfectly. After I get all the piping done I'll take pictures before I put the bumper back on. This whole thing was so much more of a pain then I thought lol. Hopefully i get good results!

I had a hard time getting piping around my auto tranny. So I went through the fenderwell...

yeah, well my tranny has 150k on it and was never serviced ( got the car after it was too late ) and recently it started acting up, so i did the service and threw some lucas trans treatment in there and it seemed ok at first but its actually pretty bad now. I took the chance and it looks like its going to need a new tranny/rebuild really soon.

Anyway...i've been running low boost, about 4psi at a cruise and if I floor it, it will spike up to about 7-8psi. My trans was actually starting to slip before i turbo'd it so i'm actually surprized it lasted this long, especially with the mileage thats on it. I've heard of these trans's that were serviced regularly on a basically stock neon and went before 150k so I really can't complain. Modern performance sells the high performance overhaul kit, thats probably the route i'll go since I dont feel like finding the parts and swapping computers to get an MTX. I dont know what the 4spds can handle but I know the 3spds can handle 10psi but not for a long period of time. Run low boost, if you want to go higher just suck it up and get the overhaul kit. Oh BTW, i've been boosted for a year, about 30-35k miles ago on a 150k mile motor running synthetic since 100k and it doesnt burn or leak a drop of oil. It used to leak from my oil feed at the block, but since I fixed that a month ago I haven't lost a drop.

I've been busy with the trans and a couple other things, I'm going to throw on an auxilarly trans cooler soon so when I do that I'll get some pictures of the piping and brackets for the intercooler. But I'll tell you now, if you have an ATX dont use the SRT4 intercooler, use one where the inlet/outlet are right out of the intercooler, not at a 90* like the srt4 intercooler.

I think I have more pics, but here is my way around the srt/ATX problem

I capped off the stock coldside outlet, and cut a hole in the side of the intercooler, then I welded on the coldside exit to the side. Then I just usede an elbow, and my old CAI, and VIOLA! Problem solved.

I wonder if that will clear an SRT bumper with foglights. I am thinking i'll have to cut the fogs out?

all you have to do is one move the computer to where the battery was and fabricate it to stay because there is no room with the srt intercooler and two relocate the battery to the trunk as seen here

Maybe with the three speed trans, but not the four speed, there simply isnt ANY room even with the computer moved.

I have the Kaminari bumper, and the fogs are in the factory spot, the bumper wouldn't fit with the intercooler piping there. So I had to remove the fogs.

when you relocate the pcm, do you have to extend any wires or splice anything? Bc I've been racking my brain on how to install the srt intercooler w/o relocating the battery and pcm, but I havent came up with any conclusions on how to do so.. I know that the pcm would have to be moved out of the way, but I was curious as to where I could mount it, or if I could mount it another way somewhere w/o relocating the batt. :-k

My car is an MTX btw.
