cheap tires vs expensive tires?

Post by jT » Thu Jun 14, 2007 2:48 am

does it really matter?

why do some tires have rediculous warranty on them like 60K miles when no tire will last 60K miles? what does the warranty actually cover?

i need new tires also, i'm as bald as a bald eagle.. or a baby's ass.. whichever analogy you prefer.. but one of the tires was a replacement for a blown tire not more than 2 years ago and its b-a-l-d .. i think it was like $35.. would a higher priced tire really make a difference?

and i know the answer is around, but without sarcasm and BS i think the stock tire size is 15" right? would 16" fit on stock steelie rims with no problems?

well, what kind of tire are you looking for basically. Something all season? Summer/dry traction? I like Falkens line of tires. Good, cheap, reliable. Dunlop IMO makes good summer tires. The FM901s when warm are rather nice for spirited driving. If you want really sticky tires, the Advan A048 are super sticky. The Falken RT-615 are the same but much cheaper.

no, a 16" wont fit on a 15, and i thought the stock steelies were 14" and the stock alloys (snowflakes and later model w/ the spokes were 15"?
go read your tire size, example 185/60/R15 ---width in mm /sidewall hieght % in relation to the width / and the last is your radius, (RIM size)

Tires are something you shouldnt skimp on. They are what give you traction and we all know that traction is THE most important thing.

Of the Tires I've used

Hoosiers Track > Falken RT-615 > Toyo Proxes > Dunlop FM901 > BFG KDW > Goodyear Eagle

Choosing the right tire is a very important decision.

^^^ wow that's all screwed up. i've used most of those tires. the kdw's are pos tires after about 5k, hoosiers are good but i got rid of them, dunlop's are loud, proxes suck if you're anything but stock. falkens are good, but definetly not better than eagles.

i'm going to go with

Should of Specified which Eagles.. the RSAs.. they were Monkey Shit.

I like my Proxes for that they are. I have alot of traction in the wet roads down here. I wouldnt use them as a Track tire. But as an All Season Performance Tire, The newer Proxes 4 are better than the old 4-S. My FM901s by Dunlop were ok, They wore really quick and didnt really give all that great of traction.

So what's the best all-season tire? I'm not looking anything for the track, just something that has good grip yet fares well in the rain. Lots of rain here...

If I end up getting new rims, it'd be nice to have an idea.

I've never ran my Toyo Proxes FZ-4's in the snow, but every other weather condition, they're awesome.

I have been very happy with my Yokohama Avid TRZ's. I have used them in every weather condition and I must say they are awesome. There were comparitivly cheap too, $53/ea when I got them. Dont know what they are now.

I also have to disagree with the comment about there isnt a tire that will last 60000 miles. I have ~33000 miles on my TRZ's and there are no signs of it going soon. I am planning on getting 70000 to 80000 miles out of them. My parents also got 80000 out of a set of Michelins that came on their stratus.

My Toyo Proxy 4s are the first kind of performance tire that I have ever had... and I am quite impressed with them... I'm sure for the price that www.edgeracing.com has them for it is well worth it.

ok well THAT eagle does suck lol

i had the toyo proxy 4's and they were a decent tire. lasted for a while, were ok in the snow, but after a few more mods they just weren't sticky enough for me. i never ran them at the track so i don't know what they would do there, but for a all season tire they are pretty good.

i'm a huge fan of toyo and nitto tires. if you want a good cheap tire i would also suggest looking into the fuzion tires, a few people i know have them and they are happy with them.

yoko avids are great all season tires, and they have 'A' ratins across the board in all categories. Not to mention a 500 treadwear rating, which is unheard of for an ultra high performance all season tire.

Yokohama AVID H4S
Yokohama AVID TRZ

i'm considering these two, based on high ratings. .the TRZ is Standard Touring All-Season while the H4S is High Performance All-Season but the TRZ has a slightly higher snow rating.. and being in new england i get snow. heh.

both tires are $57ea from tirerack.com .. dont know what they would be locally or anything.. but is there another tire in that price range i should be looking at? thats more than i usually would spend on tires but i need some longevity out of these..

is there a difference in rims/tire size for a 2000 Dodge and a 2000 Plymouth? Looking at Edge Racing they dont have plymouth, just dodge.. so i select that and all the tires are 195/60R14... mine are 185/70R14

will they fit? (yes ive read all that info about tire sizes but i dont know what the simple answer is about 10mm or 10cm bigger or whatever it is)

I love my Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 tires. They're a little heavy compared to others but grip very nicely in went and dry conditions. Hold up to wear very nicely as well...

Falken Ziex 512 is the best all season I have used

The Toyo proxies 4 are great too but they are a "max Performance" design.

Look into the now discontinued yoko V4S tires, theyre the top of the line AVID tires. Very nice, and amazing rain traction too.

For sizing, a 185/60/15 would replace stock, while a 195/50 OR 60/15 would work as well. Also, consider moving up to a 205/55/15 for maximum traction and grip. Its a few bucks more per tire, but well worth it. Thats what im running right now and I like em a lot.
