I just wanted to say that I have been reading on this forum all day and I love it. I just bought me a 2001 Neon for a daily driver to save on gas. The check engine light is on and the 2 codes I get is P1684 and P0601 . I was told that the ECM is bad and needs to be replaced. Is this correct?? Where is the best place to get one at?
I have an 01 ES with 4cyl and automatic and I do not have the security keys.. Any help would be greatly appreciated..
Thanks
Jimmy B..

welcome to the boards.

edit, i believe there is a code list in the tech boards, that might help you find out what the actual problem could be, you might not need a whole new computer.

Welcome to 2GN!

The P1684 is a common code that just means the battery has been recently disconnected. The P0601 is an internal failure of the PCM (not good). Just a few questions: how long has it been on? How does the car drive, or does it drive at all?

Also, I'm not sure if you already ran across it, but in the Engine section, there is a topic covering all 2000-2002 check engine codes, including short explanations of each one. It's an excellent reference.

The car cranks up and runs great. Every now and then it might buck a little bit but it clears up and goes fine. It usualy gives a problem when it gets to operating temp. and you cut it off and go to drive it again. I am not sure how long it has been on. I work at a used car dealership and I took it in on a trade. I have a Yukon and Im tired of spending $80.00 per week in gas. Should I just break down and buy a new ECM or look for a used one and hope it works OK... Thanks for the trouble code list. I copied it and saved it so I have them handy...

For the heck of it, remove the C1 and C2 connectors off the pcm, flip them upside down and look for green corrosion. Then look at the pins on the pcm itself to see if there is any corrosion there. If you do have this problem, clean up the area's with electrical contact cleaner, blow dry with compressed air, then use dielectric grease on the pcm pins to help deter further mositure from starting anymore corrosion.
