Maddog short shifer / McFab short shifter

Post by HOTRODACR » Wed May 12, 2004 12:28 pm

The Maddog short shifter is similar in design to the Mopar unit. Its extremely well constructed and Chuck will custimize it to your liking.
It accepts the stock shift knob and he can make the shaft shorter and you will still be able to use the stock knob. Shifts are 33% shorter than stock and lateral movement is also decreased.

McFab shift arm is nice because its resonably priced. Kind of a PITA to install but once its in there it shortens the shifts by 33%. The only thing it doesnt do is shorten the lateral (side to side) movement.

I had both installed for a year and it makes the shifts very short and notchy. From neutral to gear its less than 1" (measured from the top of the shaft). It does increase effort but you get used to it fast.
I would'nt recommend both if you like to drag though, because the increased effort will cause missed shifts.

I have the McFab short throw. It is a great value, but it has its disadvantages like you said. It also caused me to lose a 7/32" roll punch  during installation.

I have the Maddog STS. Chuck did a great job on it and I love it. It's unreal how short it can go and with the shorter shift knob he made with it, can't get any better.... 8)

I'm happy with my mcfab short shift lever and booger bushings. I'm ready for a shorter shifter but I have been wondering if the bushings and cables can take an even shorter throw.

The Maddog shifter should be waiting for me at home when I get back from vacation. Chuck recommended the Rage derlin bushings over the Boogers. I ordered them also.

update: installled the Maddog and Rage bushings. Very nice!. Good product.

Geez... i can't believe that i didn't see this thread before... I helped diana install hers... and i've had a 2 STS from Chuck (Maddog)... a 33% reduction that was awesome, and then i felt a 41.5% reduced one and sold mine to a friend and got the shorter one... and its insane, only a flick of the wrist takes you from 2nd to 3rd... I believe 3-4 other CSC member have his SRT version and all love it... I hope to make a vid showing the different between Stock and 41.5% reduction soon enough... you can find him on www.midwestneons.com

Thank you all for the kudos. I try to provide a high quality product to my fellow enthusiasts, at a reasonable cost.

Here is some info on a new STS product from Maddog Racing:

For MTx 2nd gen/SRT4 owners looking for the ultimate STS, I give you the Maddog STS EC/R-1250, which has a 50% overall throw reduction. Available within 3-4 weeks after testing is done. See pics below:

I think he meant the diff between a regular 2nd gen Mopar STS and an SRT4 STS...

There is no diff except the SRT4 STS has a Chrome rod, which is about 1/2" longer. It balances out between the 2 when the knobs are in place.

The 3 STS listed below are avialable with a standard 2nd gen rod or chrome SRT4 rod. Shift knobs not included, unless otherwise specified (all prices include a refundable core charge of $35 and a S&H charge of no more than $10 for the continental USA).

C/R-800, 33% throw redux, $145 to ship

EC/R-1000, 41.5% throw redux, $145 to ship

EC/R-1250, 50% throw redux, $170 to ship

I do have one chrome rod EC/R-1000 in stock, and an older S/S-800 with a brushed billet aluminum knob. The S/S is a discontinued STS, which had smaller fasteners (6mm), and a thinner spanner plate. This unit's spanner plate has been reinforced, and the fasteners upgraded to 8mm locking. I will sell the upgraded S/S-800 with the billet aluminum shift knob (with 3mm allen key and set screw) for $160 shipped. Here are a couple of pics:

I got my 50% throw redux STS in last week, and LOVE it. The neutral gate is only 1.5" wide!

If you ask me, once you put it on.... you'll see that a pisol grip looks stupid and take it off. Just stick with a traditional style shift knob and it'll look 100x better than a pistol grip. Trust me... seen it... pistol grip is ugaly

I installed the maddog STS (50% reduction) in my '04 R/T last Sunday with the JLM shift-tite bushings. I'm using the original leather wrapped shift knob.

I haven't felt a shifter this tight and controlled since the Hurst Competition-plus in the '69 RoadRunner I owned right after high school.

I had the car back to my selling dealer for it's free oil change and the service advisor couldn't believe how tight the shifter was.

He said is was much tighter than the stock SRT-4 shifter.

I know how that is, when I took my car in the few times to have something looked at under warranty, the first time the guy pulled it in with the Mopar STS he loved it. The second time I went back he gets all excited when he gets to pull my car in. I wonder what his expression is going to be when he feels the MadDog if or when I have to take my car back in to hsave something else looked at. It's always fun to bring it in and see their looks when they pull it in (not b/c of the shifter but because of how my car looks  )
