Winter tires. Tire experts! HELP, see my last post.

Post by MyNeonSaysHi » Sun Jun 17, 2007 2:42 pm

It doesn't snow that much out here in Kansas but it does once in a while and gets pretty bad in the deep winter months for a couple of weeks. A local person is selling a set of SRT-4 rims, that are painted gloss black, look great. Wrapped in Hankook Icebears W300. 205/50/17. These tires sale for $144 each brand new. He only has around 1600 miles on them with 95% tread. Only 7k miles on the rims.

He is trying to sale them all for $500, I offered him $400 picked up at his front door, now he is saying $450... I still have a chance to get down to $400, but the thing is I don't know if I really need them. I am currently running Kumho Ecsta 215/50/R17, I am guessing they are all seasonal tires.

I always hear people saying that you need traction with these cars, "Neon SRT-4's" during the winter time, not really sure if my Kumho's will hold up well to the bad conditions...

Knowing me, I love great deals and for $400 for a set of almost brand new tires and rims I don't know if I can pass up a deal like that...

Are winter tires good all around, say during the fall months too? Will they wear more?

What do you guys think?

Realistically, with winter tires, unless the temps are consistantly below 50 degrees, they will wear faster.

Which model of the Ecsta's are you running? From what I have seen (not on my car though...) the Ecsta's are def. not a true all-season, and will not perform well on a car like that in snow, ice, sleet, etc...

To tell you the truth I am not sure... 711 I think is the model? I checked them out and that was the only outstanding number labeled on the tire.

Thats good to know that they will wear faster under higher temps...

I say dont get em, because Al Gore says that global warming is causing KS to heat up resulting in fewer sales of Winter Tires :D

:rofl2:

Seriously though, from Dec to Feb, it will be below 50 for 99% of the days, and I think it would be a good thing for you to have bro.

Al Gore talking = :blah5: :blah5: :blah5:

$400 is a pretty penny. I will barely be able to afford it, but I think I can pull it off.... Plus it will put less wear and tear on my summer/spring tires so they will last longer.

Thanks man.

Any others?

oh yes, winter tires are a MUST here in kansas winter time. the SRT was helpless its first winter here. but lastyear i picked up some winter treads (4 tires and 2 15" rims for 160 bucks, and 2 more rims for 90 bucks). the 15s fit just fine, although i admit those would look much nicer than 15" steelies. but for winter i didnt care, not like i was driving it a whole lot anyhow. shoot, now it barely sees rain.

the rims alone are worth about 400 (ebay prices). so i would say to go for it!

I had him take pictures of the tread... I don't know if this is what 95% looks like... Could just be the picture, but it looks like the top one has more tread then the others.

Just sell the tires for like $150 or so and make some of your money back.

Pretty hard to find someone who runs that exact series, but I need the tires more than the rims and he won;t part out. Picking them up this weekend.
