4sp trans in 3sp car?!

Post by mztykal » Mon Jun 18, 2007 9:22 pm

Need help asap. Bought a beater that "wasn't running". Found out it has a 03 trans with the 03 trans control module. The car is a 01 with the 01 pcm, etc.

No in my mind there is no way to get the 4sp trans to work, is there?

The car doesn't come out of 2nd gear. I need to know whats the easiest/cheapest fix to get the car to have 3sp.

Would buying a 3sp trans work as the easiest fix? If I drop the trans and replace it with a 3sp, the 3sp doesn't have the module on the trans and that should work right? Thanks!

I would think putting a 3 speed in there will work.

I don't know if you would be able to run the 03 4 speed, but... if the TCM has the same pins and programing as an 02 4 speed then you could probably get an 02 Auto computer, but I'm just speculating.

K, got no trouble codes now. But only got reverse and 2nd gear. Nothing else. :(

What could cause that? There's NO CEL. :(

2nd and rev are limp mode gears. you probably have neutral as well. This is caused by any kind of transmission failure. The tcm is preventing the other gears from engaging to keep the trans from failing completely. There's a chance that the problem is within the tcm, but that would be tough to diagnose if there are no trouble codes. Since you probably arent planning on rebuilding the trans yourself, either take it to a trans shop and have it diagnosed and repaired, or throw in a new one and a new pcm.

I think the problem is that the 01 PCM doesnt have a provision for the TCM. So the TCM is throwing a fit, and there are no trouble codes because there is no way for the TCM to communicate with the 01 PCM.

I think you lost voltage at the EATX Relay so check from there and work your way to the TCM and Shift Solenoid, its a red and pink wire +12V. Also check the ground going to the relay. But ya good luck!
