may be getting a new car in the near future..

After all my frustration of wanting to sell my car and get a new one i finally may be getting a new car...

I have been on my parents for awile now about getting a new car and telling them i will pay for some of it...Well my dad came up to me today and said that if i saved up 2500 dollars that he would buy me either a SRT-4 or Cobalt SS Supercharged...so far im at $789 of spare money i can use....ugh i need to get some patience...

I know almost all of you are going to say go with the SRT-4 and stuff but im scared that becuase im getting a used car that it will be beat to all hell...

what are your thoughts on each car and the pros and cons of both.

They just stopped making the Cobalt SS/SC. So either car will have to be used.

The '08 Model was canceled due to "Not meeting Federal Emissions Standards"

that or GM knew they needed to build something better.

damn i didnt know that...

well both those cars are pretty similar in a lot of aspects except i can get a cobalt in a coupe..which i think is a big plus.

SRT-4 is alot more of a performer than the SS/SC.. The Magazine testing is just that.. In the real World it's all Neon. Plus it takes alot more MONEY to get the Supercharged EcoTec to a decent number.

both cars could very easily be beat to hell.

they are performance car that are purchased mainly by young men, who beat the piss out of them.

no, i don't know you, the way you drive, or how you think, but consider this: a large percentage of people who have a nice/fast car at a young age end up wrecking them (which screws you on insurance for 3+ years), getting mad tickets (also screws you on insurance for 3+ years), or worse yet, killing themselves. almost every thread i've seen about a wrecked SRT on this forum was wrecked by someone under the age of 22 (usually with friends in the car who are injured or worse). keep whatever you're driving now, drive it till the wheels fall off, then consider buying something that can kill you faster than you can figure out what's going on (yes, i know that any car can do that, but a super/turbocharged car can do it just that much quicker).

You're talking about going from 112ish HP at the wheels to 190+ on a daily driver. that's alot, and you can't honestly tell yourself that you'll never ever get on it somewhere you shouldn't (which is anywhere but a closed/regulated track). sit back, really think about whether you can live with taking someone elses life due to a stupid decision that you wouldn't have had the option to make with a more sensible car, and then decide if you really NEED an srt-4 or a cobalt SS at this stage in your life.

I'm not hatin, or trying to be a dick, i'm giving an honest suggestion based on my personal thoughts on the subject. I've had fast cars, I've raced fast cars, and i've wrecked fast cars. I've gotten a few people hurt that wouldn't have gotten hurt if i didn't have the means to accelerate as fast or have the top speed that i had, and i do consider myself a good driver.

On a side note, most insurance companies insure srt-4's for the same price as base neons. most companies look at the cost of replacement parts, which are mostly interchangeable between neon models, turbo regardless.

At 17 i had a car that was capable of 130+. I had the self-restraint to keep it under 90 for about 3 months. at 18, that car was a pile of scrap metal because i took it to 130+. at 18 i had a car that was capable of 120ish. it never saw 120 and i rode it till it started costing me more per month to maintain than a new car payment. Now i drive an sxt that will probably never see fuel cut-off again (it saw it once about 6 months after i bought it new, and hasn't since). I'll never have a fast/quick car again until i have kids (about the best reason to exercise sensibility in driving).

Eh, at 17 I had a VW Beetle so I never had a thought of going fast.

I know that age has a lot to do with what insurance will cost but State Farm just dropped the premium for the SRT to only $20 more semi-annually than what they billed for my '04 SXT. Of course, I've never had a ticket so that may be part of the reason.

The Neon is a much better platform then the Cobalt, much eaiser to get more performance (going fast, stopping fast, and turning fast).

the thing is that all those rich kids with daddy's money who got an srt for their 16th b-day dont respect it as much because, well if they wreck it they'll just get a new one....but look at all the 18 years olds who work their ass off to save some money up, then pour hours or blood, sweat, and tears into their car and know every inch of it and respect it for the machine it is.....sure accidents happen but dont say its all teen drivers who suck at driving a fast car.....if you know and respect the car i say go for it

at 17 i was still riding the bus. hell i didn't even get my license till 18. and then i had an '82 subaru that would do 85 downhill with the wind pushing.

my first was a 75 mustang II 302 v8 that still doesn run right

then a windstar minivan that my dad borrowed for me from a friend for a few months

Don't do it.
Save your money, gas, insurance, and possibly your life. Who gives a smurf if your friends think your car is cool now? Guarantied in 5 years while you are still paying off either car you won't even talk to half of the people you met in high school. I talk to two (2) people from high school, and it has been just over a year since graduation.
Save up some money move away from home, deal with a slow ATX Neon and get a good education.

Fun fact:
A good education is worth more than its weight in gold compared to a new car in high school.

If you absolutely must get a new car, get a ATX Hybrid Civic. Saves on gas, speeding tickets, emissions, and insurance.

Just as a thought, why not save up the $2500 and buy/build a killer fast Turbo Dodge or buy a conquest. You can go realy fast (high 12's) with a TD for $2500 and the car will still be reliable. Or you can buy a starquest and have way more fun.

I think i have the maturity to drive an SRT-4...i have never once had a ticket and i am not one of those punk kids that get a car from their dad and think they can beat anyone out there and if they lose go cry to their dad for a new car....for the past year and a half i have wanted one..kinda like my dream car as of now...and i would baby the hell out of it and drive it well after seeing all those teanager kids get in accidents with them.

In other news I bet the Cobalt SS will be coming back with the Turbo 4 in it, aka the motor out of the Solstice GXP.

Go buy some cheap, reliable, and economical... That would show maturity.

hell I know when I was 17, had my parents gotten the car I wanted, I wouldnt have listened to a thing any of you say!

Truth be toldf, he asked which one he should get, the Cobalt SS/SC or the SRT-4... he wants pros and cons for both.

I really do not know what it is about this place when someone asks about getting an SRT4 they have to suddenly be pver the age of <insert # here>. Honestly, I say do what you want - I like the Cobalt SS, especially in the coupe, that rocks... but they are slower than the SRT4, and you can get an SRT4 up in powa pretty quick! Also, the SRT4 has a huge following right now in comparison to the Cobalt.

But the Cobalt EcoTec engine is supposed to be bulletproof!!! If you can get a new one, (which you still can) I would personally go that route, because yeah, you could end up getting some torn up to hell SRT4 and end up dumping more into it than it is worth.

End all, I think you should get what most aestheticly pleases you.

Another myth I want to call out on all you "nay-sayers" who think that: young driver + fast car = wreck
You all need to open your minds a little. The turth is, most wrecks happening on the road are not done by young males in fast cars. Stop listening to all the hype and BS fed to you that is supposed to scare you into driving safe and just drive safe.

SC ecotecs are not reliable from what I have seen, every one that has been sold around here has gone back to the dealership for motor work with in the month it was bought. Remember its more fun to drive a slow car fast than the other way around. In essance buy a miata or an N/A mr2 and get women (not a neon strong suit)

Luxary and style is the way to go... but if you were hell bent on getting either a cobalt or SRT then I would go with the SRT. To tell you the truth though I would rather be driving my 1gn around and have the extra cash to have fun with.

If you get the SRT just be very careful and you will be fine.

I agree with Frizbe; save your money. I just finished college and when I go to work, I park between Beemers and Benzes.

I could care less about image or what I drive; expensive cars=more debt. The neon got me through school and will help me save money, especially when it's gonna be paid off 2 months from now. I don't wanna enslave myself paying for a car, unless it's something I've decided to buy for a long time and really, really wanted.

Education is a better investment. You won't regret it.

Plus, once you turn the key on that new car, the resale value goes down the drain.

Or you can always start putting your money in some sort of retirement fund. Watch your money grow 20 years from now, it's gonna be alot.

Then again, it all goes back to what satisfies you and enjoys the most and your lifestyle so the decision is all up to you.
