Starting Troubles

Post by aperson » Wed Jun 20, 2007 10:22 pm

I've come across an intermittent starting problem recently, ever now and then the neon doesn't want to start, it cranks and acts normal, but when it doesn't start, I instinctively give it a little gas and it starts up, for some reason I think its the coil, but it acts like it isnt getting fuel and is losing its prime somehow. I think that its either the coil or fuel pump that is going on me, any ideas?

I would say fuel pump more so then your coil....good idea would be to check all the tell tail signs. ( Plugs, Plug Wires, Coil Pack, and etc.) Yet, try some fuel injector cleaner and see if that helps at all then maybe later try the Fuel System Cleaner that you can find at most parts stores...

Hope it Helps..

Before it was put on the road, it gave a misfire on number 2 so my dad and I took the fuel rail off and cleaned all the injectors, and replaced the plugs and wires, that was a little over 9000 miles ago, so I doubt that its after the coil or fuel rail. What keeps the system from losing its prime? Is it built into the pump or is there an actual one way valve outside the tank? Its only happening intermittently right now so I'll wait until it gets more often so that I know where I need to spend the money, until then I hope to get a job/ money saved.

funny, I have this same problem too. Came after I re did my timing belt. It could be something with the ignition. Check into and then your pump. How many miles on the car?

When you try to start, do you hear the fuel pump engage??? I should have asked that before...

I got it with 23,000 and theres almost 30,000 now. It was in the junkyard for god knows how long, and I know that the people who own the yard take pretty good care of stuff. I usually listen for the pump to prime the system, and for all the lights to go off, but lately I haven't been paying much attention. I started waiting and listening again, and it does engage, but I never caught it when it has trouble.

check contacts on the asd relay, and put a fuel pressure tester on it, start it, run it for a minute then shut it off and see how fast the pressure bleeds off.

What's the asd relay? I'll try that tomorrow if I have a tester.

I talked to my dad today, and he wants to know how often the crank and camshaft sensors go bad and what is timed off of them. Anybody know?

Fuel and Spark timing is calculated of the cam and crank sensor. Cam sensors are common to go bad on early 2.0's (1GN) and rescently it seems there starting to fail on 2GN's.
Do you have any codes?
Loss of cam and crank signal will trigger a CEL....
Have you tested the fuel pressure yet?
You should have a minimum of 48-55psi when cranking and not running...

I have to get to my uncles sometime to test the pressure, I don't have the setup, no codes, just some of my dad's thoughts. Nothing is dead yet so that's probably why no codes, but I'm waiting for something to go so I can just fix it and be done with the worries. Thanks for the help.
