Special Tool Help

Post by dansou5 » Fri Jun 22, 2007 10:06 pm

Alright i went around to try to install my new struts and i ran in to a problem.

The top nut that screws on the top is supposed to use a tool that is in the manual called Strut Nut Socket, Special Tool 6864. Well, where would i find this tool the fastest way possible. Right now i have the car apart and i have to work on monday.

Fast help would be appreciated :D

I didn't use a special tool. (This is going to sound perverted and painful to some of you  ) I just used a pair of Vice-Grips and grabbed the piston shaft (using cloth or something to prevent from scratching it) and used a regular socket to remove the nut off the top perch. This prevents the piston from spinning and causing damage to the strut and lets you remove the top nut without a 'special tool.'

I hope this is what you're talking about...

When i do it i use a good pair of visegrips and hold the shaft high enough up that if you scar it slightly it doesnt pass through the oil seal so it should be fine. and if your removing the old struts it wont matter. Ive always used a impact to install so never needed a special tool

So, from what I understand, you are trying to remove the top nut of the strut to remove the springs in order to swap out the new struts?

If so, then you can use a spark plug socket, with an extension shoved through it, and place another socket at the end to hold the shaft and keep it from moving. From there, you use a pair of vice-grips (or similar tool), to turn the strut nut and remove it (while placing pressure on the shaft to keep it from turning). There was a good diagram that was on this site, but I don't remember where it was. **Edit**, just found a picture of what I am trying to say on SRTforums.

If that is not what you are trying to do, then sorry, dismiss this post :)
