Tires

Post by kc2005ptgt » Thu Jun 28, 2007 1:22 am

Well, I bought some Falken Zeix ZE512 some time ago and guess what - I already need new ones :( This sucks, cause I can't really even afford them, but have to do it anyway. I think the fact that I drive 500 miles a week is the reason  So, whatever.

Anyway, here is my question, what is your opinions of the Yokohama AVID V4S? (LINK) - I like the treadwear, I like the traction, but my biggest concern is wet traction!

Here is the other ones I am looking at: Bridgestone Potenza G 009 (LINK)

Then what about these? Any problems with these? I am most concerned with WET traction... any ideas? They are the BFGoodrich Traction T/A V: (LINK)

Thanks for input! And VOTE please!!!!

Im running the V4S and the wet traction is great. Dry traction is decent considering their purpose as an all weather tire. Not too sure about other conditions like snow (im in CA so wtf is snow!). I highly recommend them for overall quality and the treadwear is simply insane.

Tread wear was a personal issue with my Falkens... I will not buy these again, I could not believe how bad they wore out so quick, of course, could have been the 30k miles in under 18 months  :D

Thanks D!

Looks like I am actually going with the BFGoodrich T/A's instead, noone in town carries the Yoko's in my size, and I need tires NOW. Oh well, I like the warranty and coverage I will get with the T/A's, and they are supposed to have great wet and dry traction, so that is also a plus. I read several things about bad tration with the yoko's in rain, so looks like the BF's it is.

wow really? thats strange, these are one of the best wet traction ultra high performance tires available. I havent locked up in the rain once since I got em, while with the stockers it was every other day. BF's have a good rep tho and my friend swears by em. Good luck either way bud

I'm surprised too. I have the AVID TRZ and I LOVE them. They were cheap too.

I have had two sets of tires from the AVID line and loved them both, wet traction, dry traction and wear were great.

I'm looking to get 75000 - 80000 miles out of my TRZ's

I know the TRZ is not available in your size, but I would not hesitate to buy any of the AVID series tires.

If you can wait a couple more days order them from tirerack. They ship pretty fast. It will end up costing about $50 for shipping, unless that went up recently.

edit: I just did a shipping quote. ~$41 and they would come from Indiana, so it shouldn't take long to get them. But if your cool with the BFG's then go with them. But it still might end up being cheaper from tirerack.

imo wet traction is irrelevant... you should be driving slow when it's really wet out anyway so i always go for the best dry grip... if you race in the wet, you deserve to crash

I'm currently running BFG Traction T/A's. The wet traction and dry traction are very equal, IMO. But they have a more 'touring' feel to them... so launching from a dig, traction sucks. But for an all season tire they're great, although a little pricey IMO. I have had no problem running them in a foot of snow

it not about racing in the wet, its about being able to stop quickly. i believe i read that when wet traction is rated it is all about stopping distance.

Don't know what it's worth, but I'm running the BFG g-Force Sport tires right now and they are simply amazing... except for the rain.

The BF Goodrich Traction T/A tires have a AA Wet braking traction rating. They are pretty good for a 4 seasons tire. If you are looking for Summer tires there are better things out there.

Here is the deal, I wanted to get it from a local store, because I hated not having a warranty or road hazard or anything of that like locally. I paid a few more buckaroos ($400+) and another $100+ for the mount, balance, and road hazard for life. I can take these boys back anytime within a year and get them replaced if needed for free, after that it is prorated, but I also get free rotation and balance for the life of the tires, which is great! As well as free fix-a-flats. :D That in and of itself was worth the extra pennies I spent. So far, I like em... this morning it was raining, so on my way I was only able to do about 50 on the highway where as on the way home with it still raining, I was able to drive normal again :D

Pick up the Yokos. You'll thank me later. They can be uber grippy when warmed up right and when it comes to wet traction, they are nice. You can get them siped also if you feel you need that extra gallon of water to be evacuated from underneath you.

With good wet traction tires you can drive normally in any condition, while with dry tires youre knocked down to grandma status until the weather looks up. I dont know about you but we get enough rain here for me to consider both sides of the coin.

I drove all night in the rain, and not once did I have a problem, I never even spun the tires when taking off. So yeah, I like em thus far. Plus, they just look a lot better than the falkens  Meaning, they actually look like meaty, beefy tires should look in a 205/55 tire, not like the falkens looked. :D

Ok, so asthetics aside, they really are impressive in the rain, and I will see how long they last :D
A 440 treadwear is not bad ;) better than the 360 that the falken was supposed to have  :D

I'm not arguing that those features aren't nice to have, but they are hella expensive! Supposing you have to get new tires every 2 years (like me... hmmm. don't know why.... ) I've only had 1 flat in 8 years (cost me 15 bucks to plug) and I do my own rotations. I've never had to balance them after they were installed. I'm pretty sure that if you get them online there is some sort of warranty on the tires themselves, but each company can have their own policies. i couldn't imagine paying your $500 example in addition to the tires every 2 years. Ouch! Hopefully I didn't misinterpreted something.
