probably the strut mount bearing.

Its a cheap part, but it takes about an hour to replace it.
good news, is you dont need a spring compressor for the front, but i'd recommend it anyways. :tardbang:

Or it could be the strut itself, which could just call for an upgrade all in all.

^^^ lol, thats good info, that disprooves me ideas.

How many miles on the car?

your pulley could be going out, and it could just be your belts.

you said you just got your rotors replaced or machined right?

well, maybe you should just try prying out that little metal piece that squeels whenever your pads get low.

i know it doesnt make that much since, but just and idea.

wheel bearing wont go away with braking from my experience, try weaving the car around 30mph or so, if it gets worse when you turn left and goes away when you turn right, right side wheel bearing is going, and vice versa.

Almost sounds liek drivetrain noise.

I would have to lean towards the unit (wheel) bearing getting loose since the noise goes away when the brakes are applied. It may not be bad enough to growl when cornering as Infil suggests but it could be letting the rotor sag out of alignment causing parts to rub but when the caliper squeezes the rotor it moves things enough to clear everything thus no noise, if that makes sense. Also check the bolts that hold the unit bearing in place - could have loosened, and make sure the ground strap is not broken/corroded. A bad ground will eat wheel bearings. That was a problem on the Omni\Horizons.

I have the same problem with my 2000. Mine only made the sound when I was on the gas. Not while idiling. Put some oil on the belt and it stopped for a few miles. That's how I knew it was the tensioner. Give it a try before you start taking things apart.

If you don't want a face full of spring. I would advise using a spring compressor when disassembling the front strut assembly. The rear has little enough tension on it, however, to not "Need" one.

Only if by some chance the bolts that attach the unit bearing are loose. Otherwise if it is the bearing then it will need replaced.
