Cut timing cover for cam gear?
Cut timing cover for cam gear?
OK well i'm going to do my timing belt and water pump soon so I figured while I'm at it i'll throw on an adjustable cam gear. I see pictures all over the place with them exposed. What are you guys doing? Just cutting out the top piece of the cover? its a 2001 SOHC, and I want to have it exposed like that so i can adjust it if I want. Plus I can monitor the condition of the belt regularly and i'll know if it snapped just by looking. I just want to know the best way to do it where I wont run into any problems with rubbing, or anything else that could happen. thanks!

if your cutting your cover just cut the front one . dont dont dont cut the rear one because it has your cam timing mark on it. if your going to cut the front just zip it at the top and leave the bottom part on and installed that way water and road shizzle doesnt get all over your timing belt and pulleys and such. If i remember I cut mine at the top about 2 thirds up just above the hole.
good luck... dont cut the back one

Either way, good luck if you actually want to try + adjust the fucker since our wonderful motor mount and P/S tensioner plate is in the way...

If your timing belt breaks you'll know it way before ever poping the hood and lookingRyanm07 wrote:OK well i'm going to do my timing belt and water pump soon so I figured while I'm at it i'll throw on an adjustable cam gear. yea its just a SOHC, I figure while i'm in there i'll throw the gear on, and your right after looking at it its still impossible to adjust. And I guess it will be pretty obvious my belt broke when my motor just stops lol. I'll see what I can do with it, but it might be completely pointless to cut it.

if you want to cut it... cut it it will be fine just only cut the front one. and not the back one with the timing cover... if your worried about stuff getting on the belt then just cut the top of the front one. and bolt the bottom part of the cover back on...

Mines cut... well, it is broken actually..
A little accident while trying to pull back the cover while installing the CAM...
No problems to report, and if you HAVE an adjustable cam gear on it, it would be a good idea to have it exposed since it is a pain in the booty to remove the front cover!
