Got my leather seats in, and a weird find...

Post by soccerdanno » Sat Jul 14, 2007 4:01 pm

Hi Everyone,

I got my leather seats in and in the process discovered something fairly odd and pretty funny.

It turns out one of the leather front seats I bought was trashed (sheet metal damage underneath) so I took the seat covers off one of my original cloth seats, took the leather seat cover off the damaged seat, then put the leather on my original seat. That was a pain in the ass especially in the 100 degree weather we had that weekend.

In the process I discovered a cardboard insert which stiffens the back of the front seat in the pouch area. The insert had an interesting piece of artwork on it that I would assume was a joke by someone in the Belvedere production facility. See below. I got a good chuckle out of that.

I can't really tell if this picture is vulgar or not. It looks like a fat balding man standing behind a seat back from a neon. Hmmm...

Here are install pictures of the seats;

$150 well spent.

Edit for additional info:

Unfortunately the junkyard I bought them from wouldn't let me take the leather door inserts without buying the whole door. I even tried to convince them to take my cloth ones in exchange for the door inserts. No go. They were being hard asses to feel better about themselves so I didn't have much leeway. Maybe I came off as a prick... oh well.

On a related note I am selling my cloth seats. I only have one good front seat. The rears are in new condition. If you want I can just provide a full set of black cloth seat covers if anyone is interested. I will make a separate thread on this come Monday including pictures.

Thanks for looking and for any comments :)

Looks great! Now you need the leather inserts for the door panels (I don't know if these are separate or not) and the "infamous" leather armrest.

Interesting "artwork"- thanks for taking the time to document it before refitting your seat.

:laughing3: Hee-hee-hee...

Now that I've thought some more about it, I seem to remember someone telling me that those inserts are part of the door panel and not interchangable so that's probably why they insisted on selling the entire panel to you. I've daydreamed about putting the leather R/T interior in my SRT someday... :sleepy2:

That artwork is priceless...

I love my leather seats. But they're so hard to keep clean.

Agreed.

Surprisingly there are so many techniques to refinish leather and such. You can even sand it down in not so pretty spots and re-shine it. I definitely am not skilled or knowledgeable yet to try to do that, but after a lot more research I may give it a try to clean these seats up even better.

LOL! Those seats look great but the artwork is priceless. A freind of mine had "Mike was here" written on the sicker tag inside his rear bumper. We found it when he got a bodykit put on. But someone had a little too much free time on their hands to draw a whole picture on yours, that's great!

The door inserts wont just pop out or unscrew, they are put in with plastic tabs that are melted to the doorcard. However it is not too difficult to remove and recover your stock peices with some material yourself. I seem to remember a How-To on here for a similar procedure with vinyl.

Found it:

Hah! "Mike was here" I figured there would be other people that have found something silly on their cars that, normally, a person would never see.

On the back of my radio/HVAC bezel I found a smiley face drawn with chalk. Made me happy to know that they were in a good mood while making my car... I hope.

you mentioned that the leather was hard to clean. I was considering some leather, as I thought the standard cloth stained way too easily! Do you think the leather is better?

The leather was mostly hard to clean because it was extremely dirty, but it cleaned up pretty nicely as the pics show.

I think you are correct, bigbird. Cloth is harder to clean because a stain can just get between the fibers and you are out of luck. There are many ways to clean leather, lots of different products out there I mean, and you can even wet sand leather and refinish it. In my opinion it is easier to keep leather clean with the right products and regular maintenance.
