It doesn't hurt anymore! (long read) UPDATE

Post by Wenuden » Thu Jul 19, 2007 4:54 pm

As some of you know, i wrecked one of my friends bikes on saturday, and have been trying to figure out how to make it right with him. He told me the bike had full coverage insurance, but that was a lie, it only has liability, so i gotta do something about his bike. It's repairable, probably less than $1000 mechanical and $3-500 plastic gamage. He's telling me he just wants it out of his hair, to give him $4500 and we're good. If it were covered by insurance, it would be repaired to as-was condition before the accident, and left at that. the bike is an '03 r6 with 15,546 miles, 9k of whick were hard ridden stunt miles. the bike has a motor cage, 12 o'clock bar, and custom paint. I've talked to many shops around here and they have all said the actual street value of the bike is @ $3-3300. He's baseing his $4500 on the last property tax statement he recieved and a sight-unseen appraisal by DMV from when he registered it quite a few months/drops/miles ago. I've been friends with this guy for about 8 years, and i don't want it to end because of this BS, but there's no way i'm going to sit back and let him rape me on this. To top it all off, when i picked it up from him, he said let me know what you think, i'm tryin to sell it. so when i asked him how much, he told me $3500. now he wants $1000 more than that for it, when it's easily repairable. he also seems to think he has the right to take any parts he wants off of the bike even if i pay him out for it, which he is mistaken about. he wants about $400 worth of necessary parts that i will have to replace to make this a track bike, but doesn't want to budge on the price he wants. I know i'll end up rebuilding this thing, i've already ordered all the mechanical parts to make it run again, and it'll end up being a track bike, so the plastics will end up being cheaper than stock. I broke my wrist in the accident, and even tho it causes me extreme pain and is making it take longer to heal, i'm trying to get this guys bike back functional so he might reconsider. i just know that once he comes to the track and sees me riding, he'll end up real pissed that he let it go, and i don't want that to happen. anyways, sorry for the long ass post, anyone got any ideas?

My idea is RUN! I think he is trying rape you cause he is angry you wrecked his bike. I would not pay the man, friend or not, $1000 more for a wrecked bike than street value. that is insane. maybe because you wrecked it street value would be a gift to him as you did wreck it, but if he is doing this I dont think he is a "good" friend and easily expendable.

I say treat it like an insurance company offer to pay to get the bike the way it was before the accident, and call it a day, hell if he had full coverage on the bike he would still end up with the bike if it was fixable, and let him know that your doing it like that cause its fare and if he dont agree with it then you say ohh well i tried and walk away from it, cause in the in you dont let friends/familly/people in general drive a automobile/bike with out insurance or accepting the possiblity of loss of damage. my .02

Bingo, even though you wrecked it he has to take some responsibility for letting you ride, or at the very least be comfortable with you riding, reason number 1 why no drives my neon out of my site unless I trust them and there are only like 2 guys that I trust.

Tell him to properly insure something that other people ride...I would fix it for him but past that I would tell him to kiss my ass. If he was actually a friend he wouldn't expect anymore than fix what you broke.

Update: So after looking over his policy, and making sure he was only covered by liability, i tore down all the broken parts of the bike, I started buying parts needed to repair the bike. I'm about $300 in the hole already, and i get a call from the insurance company today, saying they're going to cover the bike. I'm pretty sure they'll total it due to some cosmetic knicks in the frame, and plastics alone would be quite a bit expensive, not to mention the stuff i've bought/bid on already. If they total it, my boy told me i can buy it back, shouldn't cost too much, but with a salvage title, it'd be track use only, with a total price including rebuild to race specs around the price of a used stock bike hopefully. I love it when things seem to work out.

Yet another update: Insurance adjuster came today and totaled out the bike. he said the payout was going to be over $5000, and when i told my boy, he offered to give me whatever they pay out over the $4500 he wanted on the buy-back on the bike. Depending on what value they place on his custom paint job, and the percentage the salvage company offers, he might be buying me the bike back totally lol. looks like i'll be getting a track bike for the price of increased insurance premiums for 3 years (please everyone pray they don't drop me lol, that would suck major ass), and a broken wrist.

I get to keep both my friends lol (the owner of the car is a friend too). He's an auto mechanic at a dealership, he's doing all his repair work, a body shop tech is doing the paint under the table, and he gets to get more goodies for his track bike with the rest of his payout. They're both actually happy this happened lol. I'm pissed about the insurance premiums, but it's all good. I'm considering it a payment plan on a new bike lol.

lol. i've decided against cutting a hole in my lip, which is why i havn't contacted you about the hitch. i've got a friend (the guy who's car was in the accident with me) that has a trailer big enough for 4 bikes, spares, stands, and tool boxes who i'll be going to the track with, so i'm covered there. and there's really nothing keeping me from riding to the track, just have to use hand signals since there won't be turns, and pray that if i get pulled over the cop is dumb about bikes and doesn't check the vin. my street bike is a yamaha, so is the one i wrecked. both will be black with no markings, so i'll just have to fab a removable plate bracket to ride down there with. the track ill be going to next year is only a little over an hour away, and it's a nice ride.
