Which oil should i use?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Turbo 01 2.0 with 150k here and i'm using 5w-30 royal purple. I was using mobil1 5w-30 without any problems, but for the extra dollar a quart I figured i'd go up to the Royal Purple.

Good choice on oil and weight. A little early on the changes though. You should go at least 4000 miles or you're just throwing good oil away. I'd go 5000-6000, with adding oil to keep it full from whatever you burn or lose.

Since talking with our amazing mechanic at work, and seeing him use only 5-40 or 0-40 synthetic oil in ALL the cars we recondition and sell, I would most definately recommend any full synthetic oil in 0-40 for your car. Protection protection protection. And you might get 1 mpg less on average. I'd been using 10-30 Pennzoil Platinum. I'm switching to a 0-40 on the next oil change. I'm not sure which brand I'll go with yet.

I get bored and need something to do so I change my oil, and considering I do ALOT of stop and go traffic driving i figured it wouldn't hurt. Plus I have nightmares about Metal shavings in my oil and right then and there I have to change it lol.

The 0w40 is excellent stuff. Its what the SRT engineers said to use in the car. I noticed that I don't lose nearly as much oil as I was using 5w30, the car starts easier, and my car runs alot smoother through the rev band.

I recommend 0w40 to any SRT owner. :)

I use 5w-30 Castrol Full Synthetic, and usually change it between 3,000-4,000 miles.

I wonder how it will do in very cold weather conditions..
I will defiantely use it for my next oil change, but I will probably go with 5w-30 for the winter when it gets in the teens and below 0's.

anyone of the "over the counter" synthetics will work well for you. any of them can do 5000miles (~8000km) without a problem. depending on your driving you can go longer.

personally i use Pennzoil Platnum 5w30 or Quaker State Q 5w30 full synthetic oils at 5000 mile intervals. but soon I will be driving a lot of highway driving so I will probably up it to 7500, but only after I do an oil analysis after 5000 miles.

you can guess all you want at oil change intervals but the only true way to know is to have the oil analysed by a lab such as Blackstone Labs.

I don't think that any of the over the counter synthetics are Group IV or above now, by OTC I mean... Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platnum, Quaker State Q, Castrol Syntec, Valvoline Synthetic, etc. Basically anything you can buy at walmart and most of what you can buy at an autoparts store. Personally I don't think it really makes that much of a difference.

good thread. i was wondering the miliage changes with synthetic, and my brother made the point that while it costs more to switch, you can go alot longer between chages, so it evens out miliage vs. cost

Walmart brand 5w30 every 8000 to 10000km depending on how it looks and feels.

You guys think he's okay to switch to a full synthetic with such high mileage on the vehicle? No worrying about blow-by or leaking seals?

I want to know that too ^^^

I just used synthetic after using regular the cars whole life  , only gone about 50 miles on it so far but??? should I worry? it's actually running smoother if it's not my imagination.

Changing back and forth between synthetic and regular dosent matter. Synthetic is only really different after about 1500mi where regular oil starts to wear.

Last night I changed my oil, and I filled up with 0-40 Mobil 1. I'm very pleased....quite a bit of the engine knock quieted down, and the car runs smoother. The 40 weight viscosity really helps my high mileage engine. I'll be using 0-40 year round from now on.

I'm running 5-20 Royal Purple, I was running Mobil 1 5-20 but the valve train noise was a pain...
I have noticed while using RP, the oil "Looks" dirtier faster than the Mobil 1...
