This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Just found Pennzoil Ultra is on the shelves now. $28 per 5 quarts bottle. A little more expensive than the Platinum but almost same price as Mobil 1. It is advertised as "Cleans out up to 35% more engine sludge than our next best synthetic oil" as the best oil on the market. Sounds pretty good but not sure about that until someone try. I'll probably switch to this one on my next oil change. :rockon:

I'm trying to find that up here for the next oil change on my Mustang coming up in April! Been to a few stores where I live and in Sac; nothing. Lucky!! If I can't find it by then, PP it is. There's just no point in running Amsoil SSO for 1yr/1,500 mile oil changes, lol. I'm still trying to get a hold of He Hate Me to get some Amsoil for the Neon...

Only time will tell, obviously, since 99% of the people can't even find it yet. Supposed to be up there with the expensive oils though like RP, Redline and Amsoil.

Ferrari recommend this oil, so I guess it will probably be too much for our cars.

RP, Amsoil or Redline would be "too much" for our cars. Ultra is a GRPIII. I did find some Ultra though a couple of weeks ago at a WM in Sac. Got 6 qts and a Purolator P1.

Oil changed to Ultra after running with Seafoam for several miles. Feeling nothing different running with K&N oil filter (maybe I should run it on a Ferrari?...). Got it $28 ($4.5 more than Mobil 1, $8 more than Pennzoil Platinum). Not worth it. It's just synthetic oil same as PP or Mobil 1.

It claims that it can clean up even UP TO 35% more sludge than PP (their next best oil? PP already claims that it can clean UP TO 43% so Ultra is likely 58% via calculation? I did notice 2 fallacy number "UP TO #%") and prevent sludge forming (the purpose of almost all of the oil). It is just some brand name expensive oil same as Royal Purple. Some claims are just too much over.

The reason why it might be that expensive is the "Ferrari Recommended". We all know Ferrari is expensive, so should their "recommended" oil.

You will never "feel" any difference in any car by changing the oil. I have $11/qt. oil in my Mustang right now. How much of a difference did I feel when I put that in? None. It is similar to PP, but still better than M1.

That really is the intent of Ultra though. To clean better than any other oil really. As for sludge, all say that. It's marketing. None are going to say that their oil won't clean or help prevent it.

It's on the pricier side because...it's the newest, latest and greatest from them. Over time, the price will drop just like PP has.

I agree. PP is used to be $23.50 for 5 quarts bottle, now is $20 for the same thing. This might be caused just by the come out of Ultra. So I'll just stick with what I said, Ultra, PP, M1, they are all good fully synthetic oil.

Yeah, you will never feel a difference when changing oil.

The only things you will notice without an analysis are sounds and consumption, beyond that it's all heresay without hard numbers.

Is 10w40 be a little bit too sticky for our car? Manufacture manual recommended 5w30, since it's warm down here in CA so I use PP 10w30 all the time.

I used 10w 40 in my v6 avenger and boy did the oil pressure go up LOL I was told it puts a little more strain on the pump and stuff but if its over 100 degrees 75% percent of the summer out I cant see how it can hurt just to run it in the summer......

Stick with 5w30 or 10w30. Anything thicker really isn't needed. I considered 5w40, but never got a chance to test it.

I used to try 10w40 long times ago and didn't really feel the difference and I just don't feel comfortable with that so I'm using 10w30 all the time.

After 5K miles I switched back to PP from Ultra. It's not worth it to buy $28.50 Ultra instead of $20 PP. I guess they are exactly the same thing just "Ferrari Recommended". I'll stick with PP all the time later.

I'm sure there are differences, you just won't ever feel anything due to changing oils.

i use 10w40 for fresno ca summers and 10w30 doesnt make a diff in winter cept for more consumption plus my engine has 140000 arent ya supposed to go one higher?

from 5w30 to 10w40?

used to use penzoil plat 10w30 but it started consuming till i found that mobil 1 10w40 high milage slowed that to a crawl

No, you do not need to go a viscosity higher.

We ran 5w30 in a 3.0 mistu until we got rid of it at about 180,000 miles. Only used a half qt between changes.

Just use the PP its cheap and good stuff. This only if you are doing longer increments in your oil changes and have got it tested. IF you change your oil every 3k, then non synthetic oil is fine.

With synthetic oil you can even run 15k as Amsoil claims. However it all depends on budget and interests in changing oil. I change mine when I feel like to change it...

i cant find amsoil so i stick with mobil 1

used to run royal purple but mobil 1 performs the same in my car

i tend to change every 5k but usually stretch it to 7500 or 8000 if i need to

Nothing wrong with 0w30. The only true difference between 0w30 and 5w30 is the cold flow ability, that's it.

My Jeep 4.0 carries better oil pressure at idle with 0w-30.

Don't have an OP gauge in the neon, so can't say if there is a difference in the 2.0

Where in CA are you?

0w oil will be better than 5w. However, the big difference would be going from 5w conventional to 0w synthetic, not 5w synthetic to 0w synthetic.

You are over thinking this, oil needs are very simple.
