Stock Air Filter Box?

Post by 03sxt » Sun May 22, 2005 4:52 pm

I was just out doing some cleaning in the car and I wanted to open up my air box and check out the filter. Since I just got the car, I wanted to see how dirty it was so I could get an idea of when to replace it. Well, I see the five screws on top of the air box, but three of them are heavily corroded and the other ones are on so damned tight I can't even budge 'em. Am I doing something wrong? Is there an easier way to do this? If I *AM* doing it correctly, did the previous owner NEVER change the air filter? Have the screws not been touched since it left the Dodge assembly plant?!

Thanks for any help. Quite aggravated that I can't even open a simple air box.

And they don't come out all the way to take the lid off.

Hmmm... I'll have to give it another go with some more ass behind it or something.

Where'd I put that breaker bar?

If you seriously need a breaker bar, you're going to break them first. They shouldn't be even nearly that tight. Spray them a few times a day with penetrating oil first, and then go back to them.

Alright, I know it's been a while since I made the original post about this, but... Today, I finally got the airbox cover off and I seriously think this was the first time the lid has ever been removed. I ended up breaking the lid to the box because one of the screws was in there so bad. I tried the penetrating fluid, but the aluminum of the screw was corroded to the aluminum fastener clip on the plastic, bottom portion of the air box. The OEM filter that the Neon rolls out of the factory with - Is it made of blue foam? This one is and it still has the Chrysler logo on the top of it printed. I wouldn't think someone would go buy an air filter from a dealership if they had changed it... But I dunno. There was also about 2" worth of dead leaves in the bottom of the air box. Yikes. Anyways, since I broke the lid (It'll still go back on with 4 screws) I'll be replacing all of it with an eBay Cold Air Intake I'll be purchasing probably next week.

Just figured I'd let everyone know and see if anyone could let me know if this old filter is a dealership item? Thanks!!

I think my stock filter had blue rubber trim onto and bottom but the filter element was plain old paper white.
