Coming up to 50K miles...here's my tune-up plan

Post by danman132x » Thu Aug 09, 2007 11:41 am

Let me know if I should add anything. In order of what I want to do:

Seafoam

Pull all plugs and do compression testing in all cylinders

Put new champion spark plugs in

Oil change with filter (done every 4K with Penz Plat and Purolator PureOne filter)

New ATF+4 in my transmission

New air filter

Anything else recomended?

I just replace my rear brakes and disks...post about that in gen. discussion.

It's actually a good idea to get all that done, it's never a bad idea to over-do a tune up. It's better to be safe and identify potential problems early, than to find out 5k miles down the road that you are having problems.

Since you are doing all that, I would double check motor mounts (if you have not replaced them with dog bones or better) and replace/clean the air filter.

The passenger side mounts have Prothane inserts. I would fill the tranny mount, but seems like a pain to get off.

Forgot about my air filter. The cone one I have is getting pretty nasty. Thanks

What about the PCV?? If you're taking the tranny pan off, might as well put a new filter in there while you're at it. Personally, I'd put new wires on as well, but thats just me.

What exactly does the PCV valve do? I don't see a reason in changing it as it still works. I have a manual, so no tranny pan for me. My MSD wires have about 25000 miles on them, so I think they should still be fine. Thanks :)

The PCV can gunk up thus affecting gas mileage and performance I do believe.

pcv valve lets harmful gasses that are in the crankcase get sucked up and reburned if the valve is clogged you cant get the gasses out...bad

when you talk about the PCV valve do you mean replacing it or just cleaning it if that is possible....

they are like 7 dollars.. so there really isn't much point in cleaning it, just replace.. they also have a spring inside that wears out over time, so its best to grab a new one, and know its working perfectly.

I heard seafoam was bad for the cat. That's the only reason why I didn't do it with my last oil change. Also something about the o2 sensors.

What is this...PCV valve business? I googled it but I couldn't find a picture and have no idea where it's located on the engine.

PICS!?

The PCV valve is on the right side of the valve cover. It's the valve the hose is sticking into.

i wouldn't worry about sea-foam killing your o2 sensors.. as long as your car is up to heat, its going to burn off most of the crap anyways, i bought both replacement sensors for 57 dollars for both to my door.. so i can afford to change em every now and then if i have too.

P.s. - Dan that VC looks great under there... seems like it matches pretty well too.. is that a mancini?

I want to bleed my brakes, but I'm worried about it since the car has ABS. Don't you have to hook the computer up to an OBD-III scanner to start some pump to bleed abs brakes, or is this only if I let the fluid in the res. fall too low? I don't know about the belts. They look trickier than the belts on my old 99 neon. How long do they typically last?

The valve cover is a Mancini :) which I bought from Opi...still holding up great

I dont think its overkill at all. I do seafoam and plugs every 6,000 miles. I would do a coolant flush if I were you with thermostat. Its cheap and easy plus it will help get out that nasty coolant

--Seafoam -- OK sure lots of folk like that.
--Oil change interval on Pennzoil Platinum (PP) is aweful short and wasteful but if you get warm and gooey about it keep it up you won't hurt a thing.
--Get her running on fresh oil before compression check just so it is fair and you have not wash a cylinder down.
--New plugs are a nice thing too. Wires might be wise look yours over good.
--ATF+4 for the trans. Nice thing here too. Are you just doing a pan drop and filter change or going for a complete flush or both. Both best, Flush is good, Regular pan drops will do the job though.
--PCV may be working but not as efficiently as before. Chrysler has it as a 30K item on Severe Service (the one we use for 3K Oil Change Interval) . Also on that list is that stupid $3 filter in the airbox if you still have one for the PCV system.
-- New air filter is good too. (WIX)

PCV system is Positive Crank Case Ventilation. Used to suck the Blow-by gases back into the engine to limit Carbon emissions. This is the earliest form of emissions control. Intake a a vacuum pulls the crankcase vapors through the PCV valce into the intake were it ener the combustion chamber. The make up hose from the air box (that stupid $3 filter) is the starting point and filter the fresh air drawn into the engine to limit dirt ingestion and then gets drawn though the engine to the PCV valve.

Couldn't really tell you, all i know is, i've been 10,000km with no problems.. also failed my first e-test, until i replaced both o2's with those. Car runs much better these days... these sensors also look identical to the stock ones, if not better quality.. but i guess i will wait and see how they hold up.. hopefully better then the stock ones, that got me to 80,000 km and then died.
