CAI?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

ARGH!!! Stop spreading lies, lies I tell you, all of them!!!

I swear, unless I see dyno proof that you fools are gaining hp and trq from removing a lid and popping in a paper filter, or even removing the resonator box --- you are delusioned!!! Sorry, not being mean, just being real. I think someone on Neons.org did a dyno to prove that nothing happens, and guess what, nothing happened. So, what did we learn today? That's right, get proof, stop spreading rumors of delusions and granduer about gains from removing pieces that won't do anything.
Popping in a K&N filter will possibly net you 1-2whp less than an actual CAI, which I suggest do either of the two... and also, removing the resonator box leaves you pulling in warm air again, that resonator box in the wheel well does similar things that the CAI does, just not as good! It pulls in cooler air.

yeah, taking the lid off the airbox reduces power because of the hot air. Using a cotton filter MIGHT increase flow enough to almost, but not quite, make up for this loss.
Removing the resonator box......I would expect to decrease low-end, because the air you're getting is not as cold, but I'd expect the high end to get better from that because past a certain RPM restriction becomes more of a problem.
CAIs, especially plastic ones such as the iceman, have been dyno proven to give gains under some conditions. Not huge gains. Probably not $200-450 worth of gains. But gains nonetheless, even on NGC cars, enough to justify making a home depot CAI or buying an eBay one and coating it with some sort of insulating material.
It also depends on supporting mods. On an unmodified base model neon, a CAI might not make much power, if any, but on a car that makes it's power higher in the rev range, something with a header, cam, A/FX, etc., or even a stock R/T, it might make more power, partially because the power made by a part is usually a percentage gain, rather than a numeric gain, which is why those muscle cars make such huge gains with simple parts.
Again, a CAI will help higher in the rev range, and apparently some form of heimholz resonance takes place in an intake tube as well, though the effect is not as pronounced as it is in the actual runners.

THE GUY IS HAPPY WITH WHAT HE HAS DONE TO THE CAR. Its as simple as that let him be. If it feels faster to him cool. He is probally noticing the silghtly better throttle response and sound that comes from any type of open filter. I spoke to his dad over the phone (good guy BTW) and he explaned that he dosent want the car to be super fast just a little more his own. You'll all be happy to know that he has now bought a K&N because the apc needs some sort of insert to fit the TB properly.

If anyone cares the R/T has been waring a Wepon-R filter with no airbox (just a bracket to hold the TB and a small "heat shield") for going on 2 years now and when I put the stock stuff back for inspection she says she can definately tell a difference (response and sound)

you get the sound but no performance since its sucking up hot air. not a very good idea. :tardbang:

Yes thank you bone. I like the way it feels & drives without a lid. To me it makes a big difference, I honestly don't care about dyno tests. I am not trying to race or show off my car just making it my "own". Plus having the filter under the wheel well sucks up just as much heat off of the tire & street as from the engine. Without the lid I feel more "umph" & a deeper sound from my muffler, which I like personally. As long as my car doesn't become too lean & overheat leaving the lid off won't hurt it. But thanks for everyone's comments.:)

It possibly could with 100 degree temp's shining down on the street for hours. It's w/e tho. It won't hurt my car as long as I pay attention.

& idk about that ACP being worse than my stock filter. It has given me more horse power, a better sound & a deeper sound out of my exhaust. *shrugs*

Since horsepower is measured on a dyno and not by the seat of your pants, I regret to inform you that this statement is a bit incorrect. A better flowing air cleaner does indeed net a few HP, but the knock off ones have actually been tested to often LOSE power in many cases, due to poor design and zero R&D. And the intake sound you are hearing is coming from the... ergh hmm... intake, not the exhaust. :)

I don't personally care if someone thinks it's better, I'm just sick of people saying "y0 d0g! rem0ve ur lid and ull get -xx- m0re h0rse biaattttcchhh!!!"

No. No you wont. You wont do shit.
If you like hindering the performance of your car, then continue to do so. But you're better off just leaving your car stock than you are doing mods that make it run worse. (YOU may not be able to tell, but the computer sure as hell can.)

my final example to show that removing the lid does not help...

I ran 16.11 with the lid on, then I was curious, so I pulled the lid off, and ran 16.12

.01 difference. And once again I will state that I am not making my car a street racer nor a show car just making it my own. & if I am making it "worse" or "hurting it" then I guess that's my dumbass fault but I'm just making it how I like it & I like it without the lid until I get a shield.

dood, honestly I (we all) are not telling you not to do what you want to your car, there were some questions asked and some bad info given, and most of us have been around and have our knowledge of cars and in particular the neon -- so we gave out correct answers. Do what you like, by all means, but also pay heed to what we are saying so in the future, when someone asks about gaining 27whp from removing the stock lid, you can answer more intelligently as well. Its all good, knowledge is a powerful thing to have - noone can take it away from you.

When the f**k did I say that? Oh the R/T runs so bad you wouldnt even belive it, man its so bad it starts every morning and gets 30+mpg and can show most of the stuff running around up here the way home. You think the computer cant tell that you have added 3' to the "velocity stack" (The intake tube does the same thing a a velocity stack) and that there is no pressure because the tube is so much bigger.
