Possible cam problem?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Possible cam problem?

Post by bigjosh » Sat Aug 18, 2007 12:11 am

I had posted another thread in the general section regarding my problem, but found out that it is no longer related to the sentry system, so I started a new thread regarding my current issue.

Basically, here is the history leading up to my current problem. The shop finishes my car on Mon, but it won't start. It's towed to the dealer to get it fixed (possible sentry issue, shop pays for towing), turns out the coil plug and cam sensor plug were swapped. The dealer fixed that problem, cars starts and runs, but has a CEL w/ codes P0016 and P0344. The dealer is saying the timing is off, the shop is saying that my comp 400 may be defective.

If the timing were off, wouldn't the motor not run at all? Or is it possible that it is off by a tooth and could be the cause? The shop is so certain that the timing is right that they are going to pull it apart tomorrow (hopefully) to show it to me. They think that the cam may be machined wrong and is causing the cam sensor to read wrong. So they want to pull the comp 400 cam to compare the sensor side with the mag.

Right now the car will rev up to 2400rpm, but as soon as it hits 2400rpm, it feels like there's a fuel cut and I am back to idle. I could only go about 7mph today. I had to get it towed back to the shop so that they can figure out what is wrong with it (this time I paid). I don't know what's wrong, but I am sure getting frustrated.

What do you guys think?

I had the P0344 when I did my Comp 400 install and the ~3K "rev limit". I replaced the cam sensor and the code and rev limit went away...

My cam sensor was replaced as well, but I still have the problem. I guess since P0344 is cam related and the P0016 is crank related that the timing has to be off? I feel like getting the cam relearn done and seeing if that fixes it if retiming the car doesn't.

It turns out that the cam magnet was bad. I was searching almost every neon forum for some info and I figured if the cam sensor is good, then the only other thing that could be related to the sensor was the magnet. Almost 4 weeks of waiting and I finally got my car back!

I was about to ask if they forgot to put the cam magnet back in. Thats why I do all my work myself. Can't trust shops.
