"body style conversion log"-->Dual Exhaust!

Post by nunley » Wed Aug 22, 2007 3:43 am

Introduction

hello. My name is Matt and I'm new here.

I had a 1990 celica GT. I was going to turbo it but ran out of dough. It had a trd metal HG, 2-bar map sensor, green top supra injectors, 3s-gte oil pan, ect.
sold it. bought a blown up 1990 Talon Turbo AWD with bent valves. replaced the cylender head. No shaft play. I ran the poop out of it until my head warped. The rebuilt head I bought wasen't even milled within spec. I was pissed.

ANYWAY. I needed to sell the talon fast, but noone had money, so I traded my overheating and leaking p.o.s. talon for a nearly mint 2000 Dodge Neon. It had no options at all and 160xxx miles! That's alot, I know

If the finished product looks anything like this crappy photoshop I'll be very pleased!

Current Project
Image
this is an idealized image of how it started, only it was much uglier.

Image
I hated that poopie beige color so much, I spray painted the whole thing black, including the turn signals. The paint looks like crap, but I did a good job masking it off.

I hated the looks of it, but after my experience with fast turbo cars, I decided that I need to keep the neon through college because it is very reliable and drinks gas through a sippy-cup. avg. 33mpg.

But If I'm keeping it for a while, I want it to look better.

So this is my SRT/03 base model Frankenstein budget body conversion!

so far I have purchased:
Image
SRT tail lamps *installed* . I found these on "2GN.ORG "For Sale" Thread. :)

Image
Got this piece of crap for $30, but I'm using fiberglass and body filler all over it right now. I will make it work. Found it on 2GN.ORG.
I'm only a poor college student. I can't go get a new one! :beatstick: so don't bring it up,please.

Image
Bought this from Jfman on SRTFORUMS.COM . Fairly cheap for a nice SRT rear bumper.

Image
I won this spoiler on eBay for $28! the srt spoilers are too loud for my tastes anyhow. The auction said it was from an E.Blue neon "SX"

SPOILER INSTALL

Maybe you have read that Installing a spoiler on a Non-spoiler trunk is easy. It isn't . They say there are Idications for the holes left by the factory. I didn't find any. Maybe that only applies to 2003 and newer trunks, or I'm just plain BLIND :tardbang:

Image
The two front posts seemed to line up with two spot welds on the trunk hinge.
They were about 1/4in. too narrow to fit. {notice the small third hole in the picture}
So I closed the trunk and used those two holes as references. I drilled new holes at equal distance just further from those indicator holes.
Now the upper posts lined up!. With the upper posts in the holes, I jiggled the back of the spoiler so that the two rear posts scratched the paint, marking where to drill the final two holes. It lined up great!
Image

Heres the second problem:
Image
The spoiler posts are too short to even go all of the way through the deck! The OEM nuts couldn't reach

here's my solution:
Image
Remove the posts with some big pliers. They simply unscrew.
Image

You will be left with threaded holes in the spoiler. Now you can secure it from underneath with appropriate sized screws and washers:
Image

Use plenty of gasket maker (silicone) around your holes!
Image
Image

Screw your spoiler in loosely then close the trunk and set it exactly where you want it.
Tighten the screws with some thread locker for good insurance against vibration (*cough*subwoofers)
Image

then use more gasket maker on the inner holes:
Image

Let it dry overnight, then replace the carpet and enjoy!
Image Image Image

I have fiberglassed over the missing chip off the bumper:

Image
Image

I filled in the bottom cut-out where the vertical crosshair used to be:

Image

Here are some more pics: (I love my spoiler!)

Image

Image The long crack is repaired. I found superglue holds plastic cracks together better than anything, it's just difficult to sand hardened superglue.

Image

Image I will definately be using this sweet viper badge. I bet the red would look cool on an Electric Blue paint!

Even my mom likes the spoiler, haha
Image

I'm still waiting for the rear bumper and headlights before I paint it

I sprayed the first coat of black duplicolor on the front bumper yesterday.

I'll get a real paintjob later, but this will do until then.
I'll be getting some wheels soon so look out for that.
Image

The rear bumper is on now:
It definately makes that crappy muffler look better. It doesn't even stick out now

Image

Image

Image

I also reupholtered my door panels in desert camo.

Image

My old rear bumper, old front bumper, and old headlamps are for sale by the way :D

picked up some SRT-4 wheels. I found them on Columbus Craigslist for $350 with two new hankook tires and two worn KDW's.

I DID NOT need SRT-4 struts. The front needed no modifications. the rear strut perches needed 10 minutes with my grinder. In my opinion it's worth a little work to save a lot of money buying new struts. I won't be interested in that until I lower it.

the front tire gap:

the rear tire gap, after grinding the "bump" off:

yes, those are 205/50/R-17. no 45's. no 40's.

I didn't have to move the washer bottle, but it's close:

I painted the brakes and bolted on an SRT-4 rear section. Yes, it is very loud, but it sounds soo mean when it backfires.

Wow, I love your project because it is so similiar to my own car in ways. Like when you try to do something and it doesn't fit so you start smashing things then you glue them all back together real nice looking. Well, thats close anyways...

Image

but u did good figuring it out urself

and u said the "nuts" dont fit up in there..they do..ur suppose to use a 10 mm deep socket to put them in and out.. atleast that what i use (i think its 10mm)

I expected it to be that easy, but my 2000 trunk did NOT have those cutaways like the new trunk style:

Image

That is why I posted my spoiler install in the form of a write-up, for those who lack the convenient cut away spots and bottom nut-access holes.
and u said the "nuts" dont fit up in there..they do..ur suppose to use a 10 mm deep socket to put them in and out.. atleast that what i use (i think its 10mm)
Again, my trunk didn't have the larger round hole in the bottom layer of metal to access the nuts, and had I used my larger drill bit to allow room for a socket, I'd have drilled out through the top skin metal layer on the trunk.

I knew the junkyard near me had a 2g trunk with the spoiler holes already drilled, but this way I could also position the spoiler further back than an oem placement, which you can notice in the last spoiler pic.

I should have clarified this more haha

I'm in the market for a dual exhaust. stock or aftermarket as long as it's cheap!
The one you see is an APC unit from eBay for $19.99 shipped. It looks crappy b/c I axed the 4.5" flame-design tip off with my hack saw :D ; I hate pointless large muffler tips

Honestly, I think you should have left it cinnamon and gone for performance. That beige/cinnamon is the ultimate sleeper color. Turbo that mofo and no one will ever see it coming.

yes.
If I would have bought spacers for the rear, I wouldn't have needed to modify anything.

Taller tires really make my brakes feel weak. I guess that's the tradeoff for better mpg haha. :thefinger:

Sorry z3roneo, but I gotta say, stick with finding some SRT sides...they flow better with the SRT front and rear IMO.

Anyways, that car is looking great! I just hope that the fiberglass on the stock plastic bumper works for you...but I imagine it will crack overtime. For your sake, I hope not!

BTW, I'd stick with the cinnamon color...it will look like ass when you paint it a totally different color than stock, and open up the hood to see that the engine bay is still cinnamon. Besides, I think it's a cool color! You could even two-tone or stripe it with another color that goes good with the stock color.
