Got my third Neon today

Post by dangerdavex2 » Sat Sep 01, 2007 2:31 pm

So I went and picked up the newest addition to the family today. 1997 5 speed coupe with the SOHC. The car has two major dents that are going to need some filler and TLC, and there is some rust starting to make itself known on the passenger fender, but otherwise the body is in OK shape. The interior is excellent for a 10 year old car, no tears at all, headliner intact, not a crack in the dash at all.

So heres my big question... Isnt there supposed to be an air filter in that empty box, or am I just confused. I know the DOHC's have a different intake system than the SOHC's, but it definitely looks like something should go here.

Ill be making a project log, even though this is 2gn.org, not 1gn.org. I dont know, I just like it better over here.

Wow, extreme dry rot of the rubber around the headlights. Interior looks good though.

Maybe I'm wrong but isn't the "hump" in the hood for clearance of the DOHC engine?

What're your plans for this one, drag, street, auto-x...?
How many miles?
How $$$?

Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the back of the car. Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car.
Horsepower is how fast you're going when you hit the wall, and torque is how far you drag the wall with you.

Yeah its got the power bulge hood and the DOHC muffler, but its missing the DOHC, lol and the air filter for the SOHC.
I would be really happy if I could run a high 12 or low 13, but I want it to be able to turn and be ready for road racing. Bacially, I just want something that is a blast anywhere.
Its got 127,000 miles, and I picked it up for $825. It was an OK deal.

Weird, I wonder if the engine was swapped, like for another project or something.
Oh well, a running car with only minor issues for $825 isn't a bad place to start, good luck with it!

Nah, the engine probably wasn't swapped. The 1gens came with alot of mix and match kinda stuff from the factory. My buddy had a 4 door with a DOHC hood, and a SOHC engine. It's almost like the people at the factory didn't pay attention to the build sheets as to what engine and trim the cars were

:laughing3: Is that like where all the Highline and Expresso models came from, mixed matched parts? Crazy, I guess I'm used to the cookie cutter 2gns where every model is pretty much the same with a few exceptions here and there like the R/T.
I don't know as much about the different 1gns as I thought I guess.
