Metal on Metal Rubbing in Rear Around Right Hand Turns

Post by soccerdanno » Tue Sep 11, 2007 3:10 pm

Hi everyone,

Just as the title says;

I am hearing a metal on metal rubbing around right hand turns. It sounds like it is coming from the right rear. I looked and cannot find any bare metal or anything that appeared to be vibrating. Could it be a rotor problem? I hear that R/T rotors have a tendancy to warp quickly. Why would I only hear this around RH turns? Hmmm...

Thank you for any help you can give.

My car has nearly 70K miles.

Maybe it is the strut tower cap thing, sometimes it clunks... is your car lowered?

Thank you for the reply. I don't think that is the problem, but I will check.

I have a stock suspension. Not lowered.

Rotors would not do that unless the caliper was locking up on you. Maybe the axle or barring.

Sounds like a bearing, check the other side to make sure that its just not reverberating from the left side.

If it was a bearing wouldn't I hear it constaltly since the problem is in the right rear only?

Why only around turns?

It is like a rythmic metal on metal noise to be more specific. It also seems like the rythm has a linear relationship with the speed of the car.

You normally would hear it somewhat, but it gets worse when cornering. Just to rule it out, jack up the car, put it on stands and start yanking at the wheel, top bottom, front, back, if any play its the bearing. It could also be one part of the race where the bearing wore into it.

Don't mean to thread jack but does anybody know about how expensive it is to replace the wheel bearings? Our 02 is doing the same thing.

Between 40-80 on average, don't know about Neon specific though.

Jack the back of your car up in the air...
Grab your wheel and try to move it side to side, if it moves, the wheel bearing is shot. If you dont notice any movement, remove the wheel..
Remove the caliper then the rotor, now turn the hub by grabbing one of the wheel studs and rotating it.
Do you feel a grinding type movement?
Does the inside of the e-brake area look dark and damp with dirt?
Those above are all signs of a bad hub, mine was gone at around 40K miles...

Very good advice guys. Thanks a lot. Fortunately I have a spare rear wheel hub in my garage so replacing it would cost only time.

I will jack up the rear tonight and see what happens.

Thanks again.

So I jacked up my car and the wheel didn't really move in any direction, but just spinning the rear wheel made a metal grinding noise and there isn't anything rubbing that I can see. The noise is getting worse and is more prominent at low speeds. I think you all are right. Wheel bearing. I don't think it could be anything else.

Thanks for the help.

If it varies with speed it has to be the wheel bearing, speed doesn't affect anything else in the rear like that.
