Ok...my hub is ok. What's the popping sound?

Questions about axles, transmissions, differentials, pretty much anything that connects the engine to the wheels, this is the place for those questions.

Now what? How hard is it to replace? What am I looking at in price for a factory part? I think my control arm bushings were just so bad for so long that it put too much stress on it and wore it a bit. Damn.

It passed safety inspection but I just want to make good on it before winter. Any tips?

Why do you think your hub is bad? Did you check it?

You need to jack that wheel up, place the car on a jackstand, and place your hands on either side of the tire. Wiggle the wheel. If the wiggle is noticable, then your bearings are probably shot. If wiggling it isnt easy, or play is minimal, your hub is fine.

Keep in mind that moving one wheel will move another, since the wheels are tied together by the steering column. If you can wiggle the one wheel without the other moving, your hub is bad.
Drive it like you stole it, and work on it like you married it.

Ok. Now, it's not the hub then. I did that tonight. Nothing moved.

But, I have this "pop" sound coming out of the driver's side on take off. I thought it was my control arm bushings. Can't be that because mine are now Energy Suspensions. It made the noise before and after the install.

Now, I don't know what it is. I figured it was the hub since that is what the TSB said it could be.

What else can it be?

If you're talking about the front end: Tie rod end? Rack?

Could be a cracked CV joint... turn your steering wheel all the way to the right or left and see if your car clicks a little as you make a turn.

I turned the wheel and it's not popping when I do that. Just on take off. Yeah. Front end. Could be tie rod end but it's just making noise and nothing seems loose. It just passed PA inspection so it can't be THAT bad.

It only "pops" once on acceleration? not a constant sound? if only once then could it maybe be the tranny mount? or the sheet metal that is holding the mount - hope not, but it sounds similar to what my dad's Omni was doing when the front mount was ripping out of the front end. The sheet metal was tearing and it would "pop" evey time you took off. but the setup on the neons is far better than the L bodies but I would at least have a look at the trans mount as it is on the driver's side.

Once on accelleration sounds like the passenger side motor mount finally gave way.

You should be able to tell by looking at it, the rubber that normally suspends the bolt will be broken, and the bolt free to move.

Nope. I have had Prothane MM inserts in since like 2,000 miles (63K now). I actually pulled them last night to check for that too. It's definitally coming from the driver's side. I dunno. I might have to take it somewhere and have them drive it.

I have been driving this car since new and never had anything like this go wrong with the dozen or so previous car. I am thoroughly stumped.

I will check under the seat but I know it's coming from under the hood or whatever. Front end. It could be the tranny mount since that wasn't filled. Just the torque mounts. I missed that part. If I get some time on Monday, I will pull the battery and tray (it's on the driver's side and under the hood) and see whats up. If it is, I will have to call Vitor for a tranny mount insert.

Thanks for the opinions.

First off, stop jacking his thread...
Check tie rod ends, rack, ball joints... anything that moves.

Maybe it's his ball joints... on DSM's they make that noise when they're going. I dunno about 2GN's but it's a possibility.

Thanks for all the info. Mine has been making a popping (one solid, loud *POP*) from my passenger side. It has only been doing it for a little while. Now I got some things to check so thanks again.

Also, Aperson said to check the rack. How would i do this? What motions to perform and what would I look for to tell if it's bad?

Steering rack generally makes some grinding gear noise when you turn the steering wheel all the way to the left or right.

Also loose bushings in the rack. I guess you just grab the tie rod close to the rack and yank in all directions, all around, in out, any movement at all without any resistance is bad, in/out the other wheel should move as well. That's all I know about how to check a rack and I'm not sure of that either :tardbang:
