People should need a license to own animals

Post by dodge_girl » Sun Sep 16, 2007 11:21 am

I work at a pet store in newmarket and the amount of stupid people i meet in a day is unbelievible, but most of them actualy care about there pets, every once and a while though we get some real assholes, when i was working on saturday i ended up bringing home 3 mice and a rabbit, i took them home because people abandoned them at my work. I found the mice in a jar on the floor with a note taped to the side saying "i didn't want them anymore" and the rabbit some woman came in and told me if i didn't take him she was just gonna let him go :banghead:. ive seen people leave a box of kittens, the hamster i have someone left at my store. about once a month we have an animal left behind. how do people do it? i get upset when my fish die lol. anyways, this is just me bored and pissed and ranting..

Thats sad. I don't see how anyone can abandon their pets like that. I can see finding them new homes if you are unable to take care of them properly but to just drop them off and ignore your responsibility to them? Its criminal! Almost all of our pets have been rescue animals, whether they were humane society pets or 'unwanted' by their previous owners..

We may not have a zoo but it sure feels like it at times - currently we have 3 dogs, 2 cats, 4 cockatiels, a beta fish and a 3 foot iguana.

The problem at my work is that i work with a lot of sixteen and seventeen year olds and when they sell someone an animal the just sell it, they dont tell the buyer everything they need to know so im telling my manager on monday that we need to have a meeting about it and tell the employees that people need to be educated on what they are buying and hopefully this wont happen as much in the future

My sister bought a nice dwarf rabbit when she was like 10 .... it was nice and cute, but she lost interest and stop giving it attention after a like 3-4 months.... from lack of human contact i suppose...the rabbit started getting vicious...it would sometimes try to attack your hand if you came close to pet it. We ended up giving it to the humane society.

And when I was like 7 my cousin killed my budgie by spraying it with a water gun.

On another note... in my friends neighborhood you always see some lazy fucker that takes his dog for a walk in his car, he just drives around the area and gets his dog to chase the car. :beatstick:

Maybe if ppl knew that animals are as much responibilty as children they might not want them. But then I watch the news and the way some children are treated...

Ya IDK how people give up their pets. I have have 2 Shih Tzus that basically run my house. They are like my kids. My tortoise I even went as far as to import him because the local shops had basically inbreed ones. I mean the 3" tortoise has a $450 tank right now and its not even going to last him long.

Not all vet's are that animal friendly either. Our Chow got out of the yard and got hit and they very quickly suggested we put him down cause it would be "very" expensive to get the leg fixed. My dog is 11months old and I figured I don't care what it costs, he's going to have every chance at a normal life that he can have. Needless to say, he has 6 pins, 7 wires and an external appliance holding his leg together after a 4 hour surgery. His leg is worth more than what I can sell my car for, but, it is by far the best money I've spent in a long long time. Damn I love my dog.
People need to sit back sometimes and truly remember why they got a pet in the first place, our 2 cats and dog are just as much a part of our family as any of the 5 humans. My dog would give his life to protect his family and that's more than money can buy and I truly dislike anyone that treats their pets with less respect than they'd show their kids!

I did not know they were the same.

Some people just get bored with pets so easily. Some just don't even consider to even think how much work it is to take care of pets.

I had a pet fish, a blue Beta named Bob in middle school. I had him for about 3 years until one day he just started floating around the aquarium. I miss that fish as much as I miss my dog Buck that died 4 years ago...

I had 12 ducklings as pets too back when I was maybe 9 years old. Sadly half of them got eaten by stray cats. :(

I know what you mean, these are the types of people that really need to think about what they are getting into before they get a pet. Quite a few people at work said "a bullet is a lot cheaper" than what I paid for the vet/surgery bill. I just said, "I pity your pets" and walked away. If he (my dog) would have been 11 years old then it would have been time to do some thinking, if he was still healthy then amputate the leg maybe but I doubt I'd have put him down if he was healthy otherwise. It just reconfirms why I generally don't like people. lol

I can understand people getting bored of there animals and giving them away for free... but to drop them off like that?? pft.

I have 3 tarantulas, (had 6 but three died... very sad moments) a california king snake, 2 feeder mice as pets (blame the roomate on THAT one) 3 african dwarf frogs, and a min-pin.

All of this in 1 tiny bedroom. :D

I guess you can't expect people to take care of a pet when they can't even take care of their own blood (kids).

I grew up having atleast one dog all the time. And most of the time we had two. It just seems natural to me to have a pet of some sort. But my fiance never had pets and believes they should be kept indoors and she doesn't want pets inside, except fish. So, we probably won't be getting a dog anytime soon, but I do plan on getting some fish in the next couple of months. I'll have to try and break her of the no pet outside thing. Cause sure I would prefer to have a small dog inside, but I'm not against them being outside as long as the owner provides adequate housing for the dog so it can stay warm in winter time. Like my dad built a house for our dog that allowed the dog to be sheltered from all elements, including wind.

People want pets for the wrong reasons just like they want children for the wrong reasons. They want something cute and cuddly that will love them no matter what, not realizing that in order to get that you have to put real effort and affection in too...
