Will this mod work on a Neon?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Will this mod work on a Neon?

Post by badgett » Sat Sep 29, 2007 9:58 am

I also have a ford explorer so I am a member of explorerforums. They have a cool mod for the TPS that worked really well on my explorer. It is FREE too. That's the good part. Can someone smarter than me check it out. Here's the link http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/sho ... ht=tps+mod

I can't see why it wouldn't. I was just running into problems with my TPS last week (bad connection to the signal wire). Computer was freaking out, high idle, occasional stumbling upon takeoff, etc, etc. The only thing that might take some trial and error is what that "sweet spot" reading is. 0.96V may work fine for a Ford, but it may not be the same for the Neon. Furthermore, the perfect voltage for a 2000-2002 Neon may not be the same as the 2003+ Neons.

Again, trial and error. Personally, I have very good throttle response already due to my 60mm throttle body. If you REALLY wanted to get crafty with it, you could put a potentiometer in parallel with the TPS, run long enough wires to reach inside the car, and adjust it on the fly to quickly figure out what setting works the best.

thats a lot of pages... i only read the first one  but why does it have to be .95-.97? why is that the proper range?

Not the TPS mod again
All this is going to do is tell the pcm your throttle is an "X" point, then the pcm is going to go through its tables and figure out spark and fuel based on that but other variables will also come into play making things out of wack.
I did the TPS mod years ago on my old 03 SXT, test were not perfect with the proper tools at the time but all in all the TPS mod was a waste of time. Especially if you get something out of range from what the pcm is programmed for. I understand doing some type of adjustment to make the pcm see 100% throttle opening when the throttle body is actually opened up at WOT, but making the pcm see part throttle opening when the throttle body is not at part throttle screws things up.
By the seat of the pants things "Might" feel like your getting more power but overall the TPS mod is a waste of time. Just like modifiying your AIT sensor fooling the pcm into thinking your intake charge is actually cooler than it actually is.....

Long story short, try the mod, if you like it great, but its not going to gain you anything....
My 2 cents from experience....

Yeah, this is why I made the comment about my TPS issues last weekend. When I hooked up my OBD scanner and had the problematic high idle at the same time, the computer was seeing about 30% throttle from the TPS, when it was actually fully closed. Doing this mod on a Neon will probably raise your idle if you go even slightly out of the proper range. Hence, my other comment previously about 0.96V may or may not work for a Neon.

this is an SBEC controller, not an EEC controller. SBEC controllers look at TPS to a point, but the map and o2 sensor have more of an impact on fuel trim's.
Screwing with the TPS voltages and outputs will probably kick a cel and fi anything cause the car to run like ass.

EEC controllers are alot easier to screw with as ford did the absolute minimum to em when they switched to obd2/can, chrysler didn't do much with the SBEC-I controllers, they replaced em w/ the SBEC-II(96-02) and later the SBEC-III in 03.

The values in the EEC-IV is pretty much the same as the earlier EEC units from the obd-I days.

Just a thought. I try to post anything that could possibly help. Like I said it made a noticable difference on my Explorer but someone had to figure out that .96 was the sweet spot. Probably different on a Neon. I'll mess around with it and let you guys know if it makes any type of difference that would make it worth doing. I'll let you know.

Sort of the same topic. I installed the 65mm ford TB but the TPS voltage is higher than the Neon unit and yes it does set a CEL. My problem is does any one know off hand what the correct PN# is to use? (TPS) The seller wasn't sure what it came off of. Mustang, T-bird or F-150. The Neon TPS peaks @3.7 volts and the Ford @4.7 volts. But I will say that it pulls like hell with very little throttle to the point that driveability sucks. With the stock TB back on I cannot duplicate that power even at WOT under the same conditions. I have no way to compare cfm @part throttle (65mm) to cfm@WOT(52mm?) but the voltage has to be playing a factor. I may make a voltage regulator from Radio Shack parts to reduce the volts going to the TPS so the output is closer to stock, or I may fab something to use the Neon TPS on the 65mm. Just need to find the time...
Power in 4th and 5th isn't any better than stock if not worse but I think that's because I have no subtle throttle adjustment for the load conditions. But in 1,2,3 look the fuck out, it's like an on/off switch.

Most ford TPS's are very similar and will output about your standard 0-5V ish. I'm not as familar with the neon TPS, but if you need to drop the voltage on the ford TPS you can bust out the basic math and when you figure out the correct resistance value you can wire in a resistor to the center terminal of the ford TPS to get the correct voltage values.

Ok I read the link for the ford forum at the top. The voltage that my ford TPS @idle position is 0.97 volts. The neon is about 0.37 volts. The ford reading is where it should be for fords. (imagine that) So now I wonder how ppl that have done this mod haven't had any issues with TPS Voltage too high CEL. Icould try doing the slotted mount mod but I'm not holding my breath that it will pull a volt off the top end.
This is what I had in mind as far as adjustable V regulator, granted the write up is for a MAP sensor but it won't care what it's purpose is.
http://go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoMAPsensor.htm
It would prolly be the easiest way to dial it in
Edit: ok here's what I did. http://forum.2gn.org/viewtopic.php?t=25866
Will the TPS mod work? Yes and no. It will basically change where the throttle response is along the opening angle, for lack of a better description. It seems like the higher the voltage the power is all in the first part of movement but dies off quickly the throttle response seems like it is working opposite to what it should.
