I saw this on some random TV show the other day.

Holden is basically GM's Australian sector. If you look around their site you can find the GTO. Anyway, this Ute is amazing. Its like a modern-day El Camino. Converting units, it has about 362hp and 390ftlb of torque.

I wish they would make an American version soon :aargh:

The commodore doesn't look bade either, same engine. Pretty much a g8 clone.

And I normally don't go the way of Fords. But the Typhoon (first one) reminds me of a Buick Grand National.........I hate Aussies!

Actually the G8 is a Commodore Clone.

the GTO was originally the Monaro.

Australia doesn't have the restrictions we do, So I'm pretty sure GM uses them to build power cars... like a test facility, but with real world data.

I don't think the Ute would sell very well in the states. I see SSR all over it.

Dang those Aussie Fords look pretty sweet as well. *Sigh* I wish we had the performance car market here that they do down there; Damn restrictions. I mean the Cobalt SS/SC, SRT4 neon, cougars were all discontinued. What's happening to the American manufactures sport compact market?

If I remember correctly, Holden is a division of GM of Canada Ltd. I've perused the Ford Australia website many times and can't for the life of me figure out why Ford US doesn't build the same models domestically as they do there. I'm not much for non-Mopars but, in the face of unfair foreign competition, I would like to see GM and Ford improve their lot in this country. Models like these would certainly help.

Rumors about the return of chevy's car/pickup hybrid have swirled around for years, but rapidly changing changing factors may be giving that talk newfound currency. The sluggish sales of compact pickups, fuel economy concerns and the availability of the rear-drive australian developed zeta platform slated for the '09 camaro will likely give rise to a modern interpretation of the classic vehicle.
For years, aussies have enjoyed there version of the commodore-based "ute" and a new one is on the way as GM's holden subsidiary overhauls its rear-drive product line and moves it to the new zeta architecture. Like the pontiac G8, which which is scheduled for a 2008 launch, the reborn el camino will offer a choice of a 3.6-liter V-6 with about 260bhp and a 6.0-liter LS2 V-8 with about 360bhp; perhaps an SS model will have more than 400bhp courtesy of the new 6.2-liter LS3 V-8.
By building the el camino in limited numbers down under, it gives Chevy a relatively low cost approach to testing the market for a vehicle like this. If it's a hit, production in larger numbers would be likely alongside the camaro at GM's Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, assembly plant. - MDL

I just can't make myself like the utes.

My parents plan on getting a G8 GT next year. They previously stopped buying GM products due to poor quality, but my parents are GM retirees and get a killer discount so they're gonna give the general another chance. With two restored classic Mopars and a lowered Ram truck, it has been many years since they had a real car they could put people in, normally they rent cars when they take trips or when family is in town.

Last I heard GM was did was not listing a manual trans being offered in the G8 GT, hopefully this does not turn out to be the case. How could GM think anyone could take them seriously if they do not offer their "excitement" brand's flagship sport sedan without a stick shift? My parents would be getting an auto, only because my Mom has had strokes and can no longer drive stick.

As for any Aussie GM utes in the US, lately GM seems to be going back and forth between saying "we'll bring a ute here but not as an El Camino" and "we don't think bringing a ute here is a vable option."

Anyone see the new 404hp Falcon Cobra sedan and ute? If only Ford wasn't so afraid of hurting cash cow Mustang sales with the introduction of any affordable performance models brought to the US market from elsewhere.
