might be getting an srt... but i need opinions.

Post by Liz » Wed Oct 10, 2007 12:32 am

 once again, my boyfriend says i'm the luckiest person known to man.. anyways lol

i came across i'm not even sure what year srt4 with 110,000 miles its red, everything stock, i think it has tinted tails. the girl bought for 7300 and put alot of expensive suspension parts in it with hopes to autocross.. well apparently it is too much of a car for her?(thats what my friend told me she said) and she really doesn't know how to drive it(but obviously gets from point a to point b with it because i seen her at the mall a couple months back). I think she's asking 9,000 for it. there is a dent in the drivers side passenger door and its very small and i guess the windshield seal or something along those lines is dented. it does have a boost leak, my friend thinks its from soft pipes and she has plastic or some kind of something on it and its been rubbing against something and now they have it duct taped ... :tardbang: :banghead: and when my friend drove it he said it wouldn't stay in second gear. it kept slipping out.he thinks its a synchro, but who knows. now if i do get serious about this, since he's the assistant manager at triple a, its going through some extensive tests because i'm not buying something for that much with alot of problems, he said it ran fine, and he beat it alittle bit.. I know my car sometimes has a hard time shifting into either 1st or 2nd, is that a know neon thing?

so now i'm at my dilemma.

my mom will help me co-sign on a personal loan to get this. but i'm thinking more ahead to the future. I have about 350 just random savings sitting around(it was going to be a carbon hood for my car) and the rest of my savings is towards school loans. my mom said she would not insure this and i wouldn't either if i had 7 points on my license. So, i made a deal with her, i asked if i could store it in our pole barn with our other cars(the two 64 plymouth belvederes.) and just keep it there for about a year and a half until my points are completely gone, and by that time, its summer. so i basically am thinking about making it a summer car... idk?! Now, i'm thinking my money is going to get super tight because of school. After i get into the health program, clinicals start and they take up alot of time that you could have available to work.. i'm just not sure how i feel about it sitting for that long and me paying on it.

so basically, do you think its worth it.

As tempting as it might sound... I regrettably have to say its not worth it. Simply, if you do.... you've purchased an expensive machine that you can't use and have to fix at a time in your life that other important things (like school which leads to a better job) will allow you to do this at a later time without .... without... financial strain.

Gosh... I must be getting old to think this way. Ugh.

I think I'd rather save the money for better use. At that high mileage, we can't tell for sure what kind of mechanical problems that could pop out in the future. It'll also cost more money to fix.

I've been tempted to get one too but I'd rather have some extra money lying around when I need them the most. Maybe you can save for a down payment on a new car in the future?

I'm a cheap ass; school does that to ya.

I say it's not worth it... save your money for something else, something like a downpayment for a house later on. The tranny problem in itself could add up so what was 9,000 turns into 10,000... or more :-? Like I said, I'd suggest saving your money for school or a house...

Not worth it.

That kind of a car would be a project car. Not something you would want to rely on every day for general transportation.

Nope, don't do it. There will always be SRT-4's out there and if you check out SRTforums, there are a lot of good deals... You might have to travel to border states but its worth it.

Do not impulse buy! I would never buy a car and have it sit for a couple of years. Way too many problems with that car. Now if it was like $4k I would do it.

Don't do it...that car isn't worth it. You may want it now but next summer there will be other things.

I bought my car in college but I had a good job before and saved up well over 50% of what the car was worth so I could get a smaller loan. That is the only way I can afford it. With 7 points you would probably be paying more each month than your loan would be to buy the car.

Why don't you get the points taken off of your record? You can take the online test a couple of times and get your points removed. Each test will take off 4 points. I'm pretty sure Michigan still does that. That will help the insurance situation later.

Buy my car, you'll be quicker than an srt-4 but it's still considered a regular neon so you don't have suffer the srt-4 insurance issues!

Tim has 175,xxx as of last feb. Of course its Tim Pettyjohn so its bound to be fast and driven everyday.

As for the car, if you really check it out and are sure that everything is right 110k isnt that much. If your lucky getting rid of some of the parts might take a sizeable chunk out of the price.

I'm so tired of seeing this. srt-4 insurance is the same as sxt insurance is the same as se insurance. geico, progressive, and a couple others all quoted me the same price for either car.

back on topic, don't buy that high-mileage money pit. considering you won't drive it for a year and a half, and it already has problems, you'll end up spending upwards of 12-13k on it before it's even reliable, more than likely. if an srt's what you really want, and can't afford to insure it right now, save up and buy a decent shape not so high mileage one when you can comfortably afford it.

When I checked a little over a year ago, the SRT insurance was significantly higher. Maybe that's because I was a 17 year old male.

I'm sorry, but I'm pretty sure a car that comes stock without a turbo is going to cost significantly less insurance wise then a car that comes with one. Especially for those under 25, not married, and quite a few points racked up on their driving record.
