Cop Problems

Ok I need some advice.

I was driving home last night in my neon. Now I only have the CAI installed right now, so its not that "attractive" to police. Anyway, I noticed that a truck had been tailgating me ridiculously close for quite a few blocks now. There was another lane he could have been in so he was obviously doing it on purpose.

I'm starting to get pissed off. As I appoach a red light ahead I get in the straight lane, while he switches lanes to pull upside in the right turn lane. I tell my GF "Flip this bastard off." She says "I don't think thats a good idea, it's a cop"

So it was a local police officer in a Suburban. When the light turned green he gunned it and went straight in the turn lane, overly-exceeding the speed limit and blowing through a red light ahead so he could tail gate someone else.

My question to you guys: Should I report this jackass? We got his license plate, and I'm pretty sure it was illegal to to all of that without his sirens & lights on. Have you guys had any experience with reporting this stuff? I mean the bastard was trying to get me to speed by tailgaiting me.

idk about around you, but typically around here cops in anything other than a marked crown vic are either undercover, detectives, or managerial staff, not usually beat cops looking to get you to do something to pull you over. i'd say leave it be and be happy you didn't get pulled and have your time wasted. sure you could call and report it, but what's really gonna happen? for things like that, if you do it anonymously, i'm sure they rack it up as someone who got a ticket trying to "get back", or if you leave a name, it marks you for harassment (that you probably won't be able to prove).

Yes something should be done but there isn't much that can be done.

Oh id be rich if I got a dollar for the amount of times i've seen a cop turn on his lights just to get through a red light.

it all depends in your local police department... i reported an officer once and the chief asked if i wanted an appology from that officer (thats the short version

)... so my advise is that if you do decide to report it, make sure you do it in person and dont wait too long.

These people are suppose to be an example and are subjected to the same laws that we are. When you talk to the department ask for the supervisor and tell him that you want to be kept informed on what occurs.

Report him... not reporting him is one reason why nothing will be done about it because the people above him don't know about it.

I say report him. Anyone who does things like that should get what's coming to them. Why should you or I obey laws that those who enforce them won't obey themselves?

Oh and if he ever gets behind you and is that close again, especially with a witness in your car (your GF), brake check the fuck out of him! The law clearly states that in that case, it would have been his fault if he hit you cause he's following too closely.

I'm a little nuts, tho. I've done it to marked patrol cars. Haven't been pulled over for it yet either (knocking on wood). But then again, my insurance is already high because of asshole cops not having anything better to do......that and my own stupidity...so I don't give a crap if they give me a ticket, I'll fight it in court. The only thing I'd be worried sbout is getting a road rage ticket.

This is not exactly true. Rear ending someone does not immediately put the person in the rear at fault any more these days. I've been cut off twice and had brakes slammed on me and both times I've been exonerated of fault in the resulting accidents. Now if the person is being a dick and you brake check them MOST likely they will be at fault but you have to have a good excuse for slamming on your brakes. "A cat ran in front of me" does not constitute a good excuse. blah blah blah and so on and so forth. In the end the easiest thing to do (though not the most fun) is to let them by. Knowing that this was a police officer I'd report his ass, but nicely.

Thanks for the advice guys, and for listening to my ranting. I'm at my internship for 3 months now, and I'm kinda new to the city. Looks like its time to pay the local police station a visit.

yes turn him in i hate asshole cops that think they own the street dont get me wrong but a cop like that needs to get in a accident and put in the hospital for a night maybe he will learn a lesson

You can't really "report" him but you can issue him a traffic summons and you will both get a court date where you will try your case against him in front of a judge. If you can prove he did what you say he did he'll be issued the ticket(and a swift kick in the ass from a supervisor) but unfortunately with just you and your gf's word against the other driver(regardless of them being a cop or a private citizen) the chances of the judge upholding the summons are slim to none.

ALSO, keep in mind that every cop has access to DMV records and will know your first/last name and address should you issue him a summons. Through DMV he can find your plate number and vehicle description and you better believe he will pass that info on to his buddies.

It's your call what to do but in my "somewhat" professional opinion its not worth your time

the way I see it, there's a chance he'll be reprimanded. What you need to decide is whether that chance is worth the chance that you will be harassed (which is considerably higher). Of course, your odds depend on local politics. In AZ, for instance, I wouldn't think about reporting him for a moment. Other places, however, you might have a shot.

Man, if I start getting harassed, I'd be usin that high priced attorney of yours and keeping written records of dates, times, badge numbers, places they harassed you and quote things they say. Record them, too. They can't seize the tape without probable cause. If they do, produce a reciept for the purchase of said recorder and whatever other evidence you may have accumulated and have him busted for unlawful search and seizure. The sheer amount of evedince you have should be a + to your case. Record yourself, too. If you were being a dick, admit it. Courts like honest people.

The "Every Man" can fight back. No one is too big to be taken down. I wouldn't let things go without a fight. And if you have a record of the summons, that'll further help your case against the dept should you be harassed. It would show as a vendetta.

Actually I belive you cant record a what a gov. worker is saying unless, they agree on it. So you would get in more trouble for that.

That doesn't mean hes not responding to something. We do it sometimes when we get an urgent call, but not a call that requires full code 3 the whole time. Also, depending on the area and time of day, its better not to roll code the entire time. Same goes for fire trucks and ambulences. I'm sure you've probably seen them do the same.

I agree with Brian. If you are going to something like a domestic you don't want to announce your prescene by rolling up sirens blaring. However, while enroute you don't want to fly through intersection without lights.

Without fulling knowing what the officer is doing you can't really assume you know how he should be driving.
