finally putting led sidemarkers on my car. 56k get cable...

Post by NiteHawk » Sun Oct 28, 2007 2:32 am

i ordered a set of clear sidemarkers from cory over at modern performance, and just finally figured out how i can put a bunch of led's in them...

this was just a test lens...i have a new set on the way here...

tested with red led's...

i used wide angle led's, 5mm wide... I have yellow led's on the way, if i dont like those, i'll just use white...or order amber...dunno yet...

Looks good, but they seem like they'll look odd.

well they will be more evenly spaced, and in a straight line instead of staggered like that test lens...

the fact they are wide angle helps too because some of the light ends up going into the lens and makign it glow...

when off they wont even be noticable...but when on, the whole thing will glow

Amber is going to be a brighter color than red if they are the same type of led. That is just the way they work.

What intensity LEDs are those? I've been working on making a handheld dielectric tester at work and the LEDs I ordered were about 1500mCd. They seemed crazy bright when you look at em in the veiwing angle. Those seem brighter though.

Chad: they're about 500mcd, lol... to better explain why these look brighter, mcd is the output where measured, which doesnt take into account the light that doesnt hit the meter... when you have a narrow angle led, all of the output is concentrated into a small area, so readings are higher. when you have a wide angle led, the output is more spread out, causing the readings to be lower, but could possible have MORE output than a narrow angle led. that make sense?

Scott: the top pics are just testing shots...the lower pics arent done units yet, they will inevitably have the same size holes and use the same size led's as the top pics...

Yeah yours are probably drawing more power than mine. I went with a lower forward voltage and current for battery longevity. Apparently, people don't like changing batteries?! I suggested using rechargeables instead, but they didn't go for it.

probably not actually.....

mine are rated at around 2v @ 20mA max... normal operating though around 5mA each.....

in any event, even higher power led's wont drain a car battery, lol

if you ever have questions about led's...just lemme know. those that know me know i'm basically the 2gn and other org led guru...
