No more Cobalt SS/SC. Hello Turbo

Post by ZeroChad » Sun Oct 28, 2007 11:17 am

CobaltSS.net

Exciting! The American sport compact market has another turbo car. I just wish they would use the 2.4 ecotec in it.

I really don't like of the exhaust looks going through the lip kit on the back, but what the hell, atleast America has another turbo car.

I think I may have to go to the dark side one day

9.2:1 Turbo 2.0 w/ 260hp, premium recomended but nor required?
They must have some kickass programming to allow you to run 87 octane on a turbo 9.2:1 compression motor....

Lose boost without higher octane.

I might go to the darkside in the future too... But I love my car so I don't think that will happen.

Noooooooooooooooo!
But then Dodge doesn't have anything currently that is even close to that market segment. Some may argue the Caliber but having driven one, it's more like a mini suv than like the neon. And the Avenger has a totally diferent look and the closest thing to power out put is the 3.5 V6, and it's lacking 25 hp, but don't know what the torque comparison is, that may compensate. But a turbo V6 would be sweet! But then no one would buy Chargers!

and to think.. i was looking into getting the SS supercharged.... hello turbo.

I do miss my cavalier alot. (I prefer 2 doors over 4 anyday)

Yea, I think I will be picking on of this up when they release. SRT may be cheaper, but they're becomming harder and harder to find in good condition... not to mention there value is decreasing more than I thought it would.

Any rumors on introduction prices? I know that you can now build the SRT-4 Caliber on Dodge's site, and then one I want is almost $26K. So if this Colbalt is cheaper yet, I will be looking into it more so than the SRT-4.

I know the SS supercharged went for about 22k fully loaded, so I'm assuming it'll be around that cost. If it is, you can guarentee I'll own one within the first few months of release. I'm working to get my car down to KBB value right now so i can trade it in for something better.

Personally, i like the styling of a two door coupe more than i do a sedan, and i never have more than one other person in my car. I hate having passangers. They drive me nuts.

doesn't look bad to me.

personally i like the 4 door, but not for a performance car. 2 door performance cars all the way.

the ecotec is a strong motor. that car is definitely going to be a player.

You would think it would be faster than a SRT-4 since it has two doors and more torque and horsepower. 0-60 in 5.6 seconds compared to 5.4 in the SRT-4?

The car is VERY ugly IMO too, BUT that can be changed with different rims, lowering kit, and a front lip.

still looks like a big steaming pile of poop.

the term "SS" has lost its real meaning nowadays.

Don't really know where you are going with that. SS is the performance version of a car. It's an option package.

The Cobalt SS is the performance version of the Cobalt. Its a high performance variant of the base model.

What is it's "real" meaning?

i'm going back to the golden days of the SS badge, way back in the 1960s and 1970s. it was originally meant to be the best they had at the time, it doesnt seem like much performance nowadays; it seems more like a marketing ploy to me. then again, i associate SS with big block V8's

Cram a big block into a cobalt.

Technology has advanced. I mean we are making 500hp out of 427 ci engine and running on unleaded pump gas. Or people are making 400hp on a turbocharged 2.4l engine on pump gas.

You can't compare the way the power is made to how it was made back then, but one thing is in common they make the power.

Not all SS's were big blocks in that time. Camaro's, Impala's and Nova's had small blocks in their SS package.

It's all about marketing, even then. A consumer wanted their high performance version to be separated a bit. Someone can say I have a Camaro, then people will wonder what engine is in it. Or they can say I have a Camaro SS, people will know that it has some balls.

The same can be said about the SRT, R/T, GT, SVT, etc. The only reason why the vehicles carry that designation is marketing.

We have a 71 Chevelle SS with a 350 small block and an automatic tranny. By far that wasn't the best they had.

Super Sport can mean a lot of things. R/t is from the 70's and it is on a neon with 150 hp.

Honestly R/T has sort of lost it's meaning too as was hinted at above.
There are alot of cool things about the 2.0 magnum motor. It's a good motor. But it doesn't deserve the R/T badge. Neither did the 1gn neon R/Ts

Cobalt is one of only two GM products that I like (the other being the Solstice). This is high praise coming from "Mopar or no car" me. My family did have some GM cars before my Dad's employment with Chrysler as my mother was working at a Cadillac dealership until I arrived on the scene in 1959.
