cracked rim...

Post by fearingdark » Mon Nov 05, 2007 4:07 pm

i have an 18" motegi rim that is cracked on the inside egde. the crack is about an inch long, with the widest part being about 1/16th of an inch (right on the lip).

so i was wondering if i can:

1. use a TIG welder and run a ratchet strap around it to compress it and fill it.

2. fill it with JB weld and run a ratchet strap around it to compress it.

i just hope that i don't have to get rid of the wheel...that would suck.

thanks for the help...

I would not use JB Weld on a wheel. If you can tig well, that might be a good way. 03sxt had to do something to a wheel not too long ago. maybe ask him and see what that was, i think there was some kind of repair and repaint.

he had to hammer out a bend in the lip, not a crack in the wheel

A good weld then grind smooth should work. Dont know if this is possible, but if you can drill out the ends of the crack it will prevent it from spreading which can happen even if you fill it.

Heating the area with a rosebud torch will help penetration. Sending it to be professionally repaired is the safest way. But if the cost is more than half it's either risk it or a new one. I know on Semi rims it is illegal to weld on a steering tire but automotive I doubt it. but don't quote me on that.

I would buy a new rim, repairing certain dented and/or cracked rims is expensive.

Once the repair is done, I would probably say that the rim/wheel wouldn't drive the same/properly. I wouldn't feel safe driving on a previously cracked/dented rim. If something were to happen again, you might end up screwing up the tire.

Thats my opinion.
