Ugh exhaust confusion

Post by w0158981 » Tue Nov 06, 2007 10:15 pm

so i had recently purchased an exhaust 4" tip straight pipe for my 2000 chrysler neon hoping that i wouldn't have to do any body work like cutting holes so i take it to get put on the guy first says its going to be turned sideways like my existing muffler is and then later tells me the only way to stick it on the back is cut a whole in my bumper so i said no hell with that and posted an add online and luckily sold it for more then what i original paid for it. so anyways i am now exhaust less and left at a decision point, i want to make my car look better but on the other hand like the sound of an exhaust, for my car to look better i found rims is the way to go a nice set of rims makes a neon look sweet, any tips on where to get a decent set of rims for the cheapest? also the exhaust, well i think i'm going to look for an actual 2000 neon exhaust where the muffler is actually sideways, i'm not super intrested in the dual tip one that i seem to find everywhere only because a) it is everywhere but b) because the tips look huge and noisey lol i live ina residental area i juss want something noticable but not to the point where everywhere is like ewwww you guys all know what i mean, so guys i come to you for help i need to find online here either a decent exhaust or something to make my car look better maybe a spoiler rims hood? but i can't spend a whole lot looking for the deals i'm searchin on ebay but i'm not doin so good havin troubles so guys and girls i need your help please

The Vibrant exhaust doesn't sound bad at all. It doesn't sound like a honda ( that's a + ). The only way to describe it would be a respectable sound. Not to deep and not to loud.

I have 1 that i may be selling in another few weeks. Shipping would be killer to goto Canada but unless you can find it cheaper than go 4 it.

sweet so i can buy pretty much any muffler and weld it in place of my stock one and keep the same tip that came with my car and it will sound better? because finding a muffler with the curved end for a neon is tough stuff.

the shop that installed this for me used some exhuast pipe they had laying around to make the tip they curved it down to come out under the bumper
you could probally cut the tip off of the stock muffler and weld onto the new muffler
when i had that muffler on my car you couldn't see the muffler just the tip

^ From my experience with exhaust related business, your gonna get what you pay for, for the most part. For me Its all about magnaflow, i have a universal polished oval magnaflow muffler welded in place of the stocker and had the shop weld a piece of pipe on for the tip, but instead of having like the stock turndown i had it come straight out with a flush cut on the end of the tailpipe and modified the passenger side hanger so the tailpipe/tip would clear the bumper. Then i Bought a nice 3.5" chrome tip put it on and it looks like it came from the factory that way, thats the route i suggest.

so i've done alot of looking and i'm thinking of getting a universal magnaflow in the place of my stock exhaust now i'm not going to lie i always thought it was the tip that made the big difference but i've now learned its stricly the muffler so i have to ask as i look through the hundreds of mufflers on magnaflows site lol what does affect the sound? like in the muffler? i have decided i want to buy one and just buy a tip to clamp on the back but i got no clue what size inlet to look for or what size muffler to get and what all that stuff matters sorry for the rookie questions guys.

Ok I just went out and measured my magnaflow muffler, it is a 4" x 9" Stainless Polished Oval, 14 " long, 2.5" Inlet and Outlet. It is welded in place off the stock muffler, any muffler shop worth anything will have no trouble putting it on for you, and tell them you want a the tailpipe to come straight out the back so you can put a tip on it, not like the stock turn down.

P.S. Grab a sawzall and cut the stock muffler off before you go to get the new one put on so you can have a bit of fun turning heads lol, and also make sure you cut the pipe just as it goes into the stock muffler if you plan to cut it off youself.

Inlet size won't matter if they are welding the muffler to your factory pipe. they'll just weld an adapter to make it fit. IIRC the stock inlet pipe is 2" od on the 2000/early 2001 exhausts. the muffler pipe diameter will play a small part in the loudness bigger = louder. just get a muffler with at least the outlet the same size as the tip you use so there is less labor/parts needed to attach it.
Edit: see pic above.

^ Hah ya I should have explained that you don't have to have 2.5" inlet cause they will expand or weld on an adapter.

if they weld anything in make sure they take out the entire system, weld then install it in.. shops tend to do the welding with everything installed and can never get the top part thats under the heat shields, then a couple months later you have a exaust leak thats getting bigger every day.

eh... around where i live, No

But you are from Canada... and i don't know how bad your winters are. So lets see if we can get come of ur fellow country men to chime in on this.

But either way you shouldn't have to worry about getting another cat back. Nothing should go bad like that.

Umm last I checked my exhaust was 6 years old and I had a new Muffler put on and the rest of the system is stock, thats just crazy having to replace the entire system, there would be no need to.
