Hudson_Neon's head project... IS RESURECTED!

Post by Hudson_Neon » Mon Nov 12, 2007 4:46 pm

ok, so i found this sittin in the back of the shop yesterday. we were kinda slow and the boss had us cleaning. he wanted to just throw it. but i said that i could take it off his hands for him. and so the journey begins. it's got plugs and all still in it. this should be fun.

yeah, it's off a 96 though. i shouldn't have any problems though right? i'm putting ALL new internals in it.

little update. i got started on cleaning everything. and yet another head with a stamping on the inside. i found out that my dad cleaned out his tool box and didn't know what a tool was so he just threw it. turns out it was my valve spring compressor. so i gotta go get a new one, with his money : ) i'll be getting a nice one this time. can you say Snap-On? gotta pick up some more brake cleaner/carb cleaner while i'm out tomorrow too.

Sweet deal

I'd be sure to check the head over good before doing much work. Warpage, cam journals, ect...

You'll need to get an EGR blockoff plate to run the head on your car.

it's actually in good condition. i guess the only reason that it came off the car was cause they needed a look inside.

 Looking good sofar, keep us updated.

Just a side note, a half-round metal rasp does a good job keeping the port openings round and not all lop-sided; although your's look nice and round

Do you have access to a flow bench?

The best way to port a head is to set it up on a flow bench so that all the ports flow the same, regardless of size.

no, i don't have access to a flow bench. i wish i did. oh, and i made a mathmatical mistake. the new size is 1.438" not 1.313". my bad.

got the second one done. this is for sure a task. i know the mating surface looks a little rough as do the ports. but it's all gonna get cleaned up in the end

as i was doing this one i got to thinking.

should i go with new stock 2gn valves and retainers or go with the INDY valves from modern and use the retainers that are in THIS head?

ok, so i finished the porting of the exhaust ports. still need to do the polishing. i also borrowed a half assed valve spring compressor from my boss. and got SOME of the springs out. i've done some thinking. and i'm gonna just order the top end performance rebuild kit from modern and get some new valves and valve guides and some other seals and such from the dealership.

ok, got the rest of the valves out tonight. and when i was cleaning up around the valve seats i noticed the REALLY rough castings. so i started smoothing out the castings in there. got one set done. i think i'll do ALL of the porting before i even worry about the polishing.

ok, well i found 2 more casting numbers or something inside tonight. and started a little on an intake port because i didn't wanna risk screwin up the valve seats with what my grinding stone had been reduced to. snap-on stops by work tomorrow so i'm gonna talk to him about a carbide bit set. their site lists a set at $105 but the snap-on guy is usually cheaper.

ok, so i got ANOTHER new toy to help speed this process up. and by doing so i really don't know if i need to polish it. this thing leaves very minimal markings. the marks look a ton worse in the pics than in person. but either way the porting is done. now to figure out how to get the valve guides out. this should be fun. anybody done this on a neon before?

When I had time to do head work I found a dremel with the long snake attachment:
http://www.dremel.com/DremelCMS/Pop-ups ... 6226&tab=1
Works great for tight corners and its easier to control than a big bulky tool like you posted above.
As far as a flow bench is concerned, why not make one?
All you really need is something to seal the comustion chamber and flow air through the ports and have a meter of some type to measure CFM...

the tool i got posted above isn't actually all that bulky though. it's only about 5" long and depending on how far out i put the bur 3-4" the other way. but yeah. i gotta find a dyno so i can do a before and after. we'll see how much the NGC can actually control. i should be done by christmas. that way i'm only spending spare money not car payments and such.

ok. well i got all the valve guides out. next on the list is the rest of the stuff from napa. i need a new one of those barbs for the coolant, and i'm ordering a new timing belt from napa. it's supposed to be higher quality and it has a blue backing on it.

then there's the stuff from modern. i'm gonna be picking up a crane 12, crane springs, a head gasket set, and indy valves sense i already have the proper valve keepers.

if you are wanting to stay in the stock rpm range a comp 400 would be better.

i'm not too worried about the rpm range. 1500 isn't that bad in my eyes. and that's only if i can't work it down a little with an adjustable cam gear

Hope you plan on making a custom header for that head, or else your not going to see much gains due to reversion.

Since the head is toast, you should cut it up. Run a band saw or hack saw right down the middle of cylinder. That way you'll learn were all the water passages are for when you port your next head.
