Lol yea but does anyone know how much gas the neon uses to idle or coast in gear? Coasting in gear seems stupid to me...cuz all it does is slow the car down. I figure if my car is off for 30 secs at least then i save gas.[/quote]

It will use more fuel coasting in N then in gear. In gear the manifold is under higher vacuum so the PCM shuts down the injectors more than it would to maintain idle. But in heavy traffic I doubt it matters much. But say going down a long hill put it in 4th (MTX) and let off the gas and it will use less than in N and coasting. The 41TE/A604 will actually downshift for you if the cruise is set. At least the one in my Shadow did. Coasting is actually illegal in some states, but I'm not sure how it could be proven/enforced other than admitting to it.

Just kinda skimmed through but I didn't see it mentioned. If you're coasting and you decide "Hey, let me turn the engine off to save gas..." and you turn your key all the way to off and then go into a bend, you'll probably lock your wheel.

Gas isn't expensive. I fill up every other week and it costs me about $35-40. Wow... thats alot. hm.. So when I first started driving back in 1999 gas was $1.99 a gallon. Right now 93 octane is $3.41.. So in 8 years gas has currently went up $1.42 a gallon. So i spend about $17 more than I did for the same amount of gas.. whoopie. If money is that tight how bout you eat one less time at a restaurant.

You need it one way or the other. I went from spending $20 to fill up my tank, to $29 over the corse of about 5 years. It doesn't seem to matter to much to me.

Best Buy has no plans to downsize. We are doing very well as a company. We are scheduled to open double the amount of stores we have now in the next couple years. 4 of which are in my area. The new stores in China, Turkey, P.R. are also going to fund alot of profit. Not to mention the New Best Buy Mobile Shops, the Expansion of Magnolia Audio Video etc etc etc.

So how bout you know what you are talking about before you say it. Or how bout read a bit. TWICE magazine is a good place to start.

(I was being conservative - don't want anyone blaming me because they scattered their engine) Yeah 4th gear won't do shit for compression braking, but it will help "conserve fuel" for those of us that put 50-100 miles a day on our cars.
Mox and Opi:Yes with inflation figured in gas isn't expensive, but it would also be nice if wages kept up with inflation and other cost. So yes it does hurt most of us when it cost $100 more a month to get to work than it did a few years ago. I know my wages haven't went up that much. Add to that when you have mouths to feed and you'll get the point real fast. Everyone's situation is different, so there's no sense arguing about who's job is better, blah, blah... that can go in the off topic section.

Just FYI, Magnolia would be a fun place to work. I worked at a place up here that was comparable and working with theater systems worth 50,000$ to 400,000$ was a blast. It was all the stuff I knew I would never be able to afford, I mean installing speakers that were 15,000$ a piece. (yes, 2 fronts were 30,000$).

Best buy does pay well w/ benefits for this job. Working in the stores could be quite a different experience.

Also, you attacked him in this thread for his place of employment, He said nothing about best buy until after you did. I fail to see how your last statement can be true since you brought it up. I'm happy that someone finds enjoyment in work, we should all be so lucky.

I make enough in a different field that I don't worry about even looking at the price of gas, does that mean I shouldn't be happy about where I work?

yea but then u have to think if u put it in neutral and coast...even tho the car is burning more gas...its going to INCREASE its speed greater than it would if u left it in gear. Which means that when u put it back in 5th u wont have to use as much gas to accelerate the car since speeds over 50mph make the car inefficient...

In traffic i feel like im being environmentally friendly by turning my car off...my friend caught carbon monoxide poisoning from sitting in traffic...if the three cars in front of u havnt cleared the stoplight there is no point in having the car on. Esp. on flat ground.

FYI...dc/md/va traffic...stands still even on green lights...so u CAN sit for much longer than 2 mins.

If Mox and Ozz are comfortable with their jobs then that is all that matters.

No need to be acting like that here Adionik.

That's when people should consider mass transportation or hybrid tech. which was designed for that type of use.

Environmental impact was not what this was about, although you do have a valid point, aside from the negative impact of starting the car constantly (they run rich on start from what I've read).
Point still remains that from an economical stand point, the fuel savings is negated by the wear and tear.

The Neon's PCM is designed to shut fuel off completely when coasting, unless certain parameters are met. Since the PCM has no way of knowing what gear the transaxle is in in a manual trans application, the information you found on the honduh forums is incorrect; well at least in our case. Several modern OBDII cars use this method to save fuel. The wasted spark ignition system still fires, but the fuel injectors recieve a 0% duty cycle command from the computer. Once the car reaches a certain RPM, the injectors will turn back on to prepare for an idle situation. There is no reason to turn the car off while cruising.

hm i've been reading ppl talking about draft-assisted stop being dangerous becuz u lose ur power steering/brakes...i've NEVER done this...but theoretically it seems quite safe..if u draft a semi at 60mph and suddenly it must come to a stop...assuming u havnt used ur brakes since u turned the car off...then u should have enough pressure left to decrease ur speed to a reasonable amount.

At any point u apply ur brakes u will be traveling slower than the semi...because the larger mass takes time to slow down...so u'd still have enuff time to turn the car bak on and apply more power.

2600lb car stops ALOT faster and easier than a 3+ton vehicle.

Someone should definitly do that at their own risk. IMO it is not safe and shouldn't be done for any reason.

Cars should remain running anytime a car is in motion.

I have already seen what happens in an electrical failure (engine shut off (spark plug wires shorted), no vacuum). The guy couldn't stop and steering was extremely difficult. Luckily he had the space to coast it out to a stop (about a mile or so) from 80kph. Not something I would want to do in traffic.

Also, you would be amazed how fast a transport can slow down to the point where you are going to impact them. If he's doing 40 and you're doing 60. You are gonna rear end him, and you could have as little as 2 seconds to start the engine and apply the brakes, that is after you realize that you can't stop because you lost vacuum somewhere (I believe some of the HVAC controls feed from the vacuum system like the extern/intern flow selector).

I don't gamble, so I would never do it.

Actually you can, the vacuum behind the vehicle will continue to pull you closer albeit a slow rate. I remember my drivers ed teacher telling us about how one of his friends was in some [insert sports car] drafting a semi with the engine off in neutral and not even a foot off of the guys trailer that they were drafting. They started at about 4 ft away too.

Bottom line, don't be a retard, keep the engine running whenever in motion so that everything will work correctly. I mean really how often do you drive without power steering or brakes? If it was an everyday thing then it wouldn't matter, but why take the chance? I'd rather waste gas driving my own car then saving it by drafting with it off and doing something that nobody is really prepared for.

You are gonna rear end him, and you could have as little as 2 seconds to start the engine and apply the brakes, that is after you realize that you can't stop because you lost vacuum somewhere (I believe some of the HVAC controls feed from the vacuum system like the extern/intern flow selector).

I don't gamble, so I would never do it.
u cant go faster than the car ur drafting tho...lol...that makes no sense.
What makes no sense? the fact that if his brakes are slowing you down too, then it's already too late?

Why do people have to start bitching at each other all the time....it seems like im in school all over again....
Everyone is entitled to there opinion and has every right to express it, but to turn a topic about a simple question into a frickin battle like this is just not allowed here. 2GN is not like other sites that allow bashing and bickering back and forth like this. 2GN is known for its wealth of knowledge and the members here who help people out when needed.
