Powersteering problem.

Post by deep1ca » Fri Dec 07, 2007 12:25 pm

Im back again with another problem, my car seems to be falling apart on me.

Past two days my cars power steering has been getting heavy, its at a point now where if my foot isn't on the gas I have no power steering at all, when I put my foot down on the gas the power steering comes on.

I checked the power steering fluid and its fine.

Time for a new power steering pump?
Expensive repair?

Is the belt tight?

I can't remember off the top of my head right now if it is connected to the belt or not... I'm not certain, but if you do need a new pump and an 03-05 will work send me a PM - I've got mine from when I switched to SRT.

a belt was squeaking for the past 2 weeks, maybe the belt just finally snapped or something?

Could it be related?

If it is the belt, I just don't understand why the power steering would kick in when I step on the gas, shouldn't I hear squeaking if the belt is slipping and not tight enough?

If the belt was sqeaking for the past 2 weeks I'd say it's a good chance it's related to the current problem. It's a good place to start looking though.

yesterday the steering felt abit heavy, this morning i had no power steering for most of the time, and now its just feeling abit heavy again. wtf

kinda seems like a pump problem to me, unless belts loosen and tighten themselves

A slipping PS belt will cause steering to be harder and the effort to steer can vary as the slippage may also vary.

If the belts have never been replaced now might be a good time to get both the PS/AC belt and the alternator belt changed.

Inspect the tensioner pully for the PS/AC belt as well. If this part isn't doing the job any more or doesn't turn smoothly or without noise then that will need to be replaced as well... and if that is going to be replaced have a look at the rubber inside the upper torque strut. If that is shot, replace it at the same time.

CDN dealership parts prices:

Upper torque strut: $113
PS/AC belt tensioner: $204
Belts: $30

Could be a low-boost problem causes either by the pump or or a leak in the system. If the belt was slipping I doubt you would see better results under load (throttle).
