Minor reverse problem

Post by Sexy02sxt » Wed Dec 12, 2007 3:15 pm

Since nobody is helping in the "general" section, maybe someone can help here :D
Sometimes when I put my car in reverse and start to drive, it pops right back out of gear. I try to make sure its all the way in gear but it still happens. The second time I put it in reverse it works fine. What the heck is goin on? :beatstick: For reference, its a 2002 mtx with 74K on it.

I have had the same problem a few random times but with first gear. My dad told me it could be the throw out bearing. Maybe someone that knows will chime in.

Hah... it's definitely not a throw out bearing. It's probably synchros. Hold the shifter in reverse when you are using that gear. Once it gets too annoying, replace the trans.

Reverse isn't synchronized. It's normal for it to not want to go into reverse. Once you get it all the way into gear though, it should stay. Is it actually going all the way into gear and then popping out, or it is just difficult to get it to go all the way in?

As far as coming out of first gear is concerned, it could be a synchro. If the synchro was going out, it would grind when you tried to shift into first, making dificult to get all the way into gear. If it's going all the way in and then popping out, it's not the synchro, it's the locking collar.
