motor mounts

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

if you're talking about the upper torque strut, the piece bolted on to the end, they serve no purpose. And they don't all have them. My sxt didn't and my srt does.

How much do they weigh? They could just be there for vibration control like on exhaust systems that have a weight mounted on an arm to them.

I'd say next to nothing. Its small, maybe a square inch by a couple mm thick, lightweight aluminum.

Yes, I've seen that part... my old upper torque strut had one and so does my new one.

Must be there for some reason... if it is there for no reason then that goes back to the days when cars were boat like, had rear fins and several other parts that served no useful purpose.

Oh wait... maybe those fins were guidance systems to keep the car on the straight and narrow as it barreled down the highways. <shrug>

Now the "fins" are on a horizontal plane instead of mostly vertical and we call them spoilers.

Yep, they are there to dampen harmonic vibrations. You won't see much of a difference with or without them.
