seperating the highs from a 3-way speaker

Post by daver » Mon Dec 17, 2007 10:58 am

Looking to replace the front speakers in my 01.

Been considering the Kicker upgrade, which I've found for about $130 brand new, shipped.

However I already have a nice set of 2-way 6" speakers I'd like to use in the doors, problem is if I go that route, I don't have or haven't found a set of tweeters I'd like to use to replace the OEM dash units.

I also aquired a set of 3-way 6" speakers very inexpensively that I don't particularly need, and wouldn't mind experimenting with.

I was considering removing the center post with the small mid and tweeter and mounting them on a custom plastic plate to directly replace the OEM tweeters. (Note: I would then discard the not-needed woofer.)

I would think if I re-use the crossover that's part of the 3-way speaker that would keep the now 2 way-plated mid and tweeter receiving only the frequencies it can handle correct?

I'm sure lots of people will have more expensive better ways to this and recommendations for available tweeters, but any reason not to use what I already have?

u wouldnt need to reuse the crossover,. the factory wiring has one built into it.. at least mine did.. the problem you might have is with how they are wired, the stock front speakers are 8ohms in the doors, and 8ohm tweets, wired together to get 4ohm for each front channel. if you wire up aftermarket speakers which are usually 4ohm, then add tweets probably 4ohm as well, you'll get 2ohms (not sure on dismantling speaker thing) but you could damage your radio, or kill your speakers..
I just ditched the tweets, and installed some polk 6.5" 2 ways in the door. dont miss the tweets at all.

Not all of them can; remember most radios only use 18-20gauge wires and the fuses for the radios (the one in the car not on the radio) would need to be replaced for the higher output.
